Hospital Profile

 

West Suffolk Hospital is a 430 bed District General Hospital based in Bury St Edmunds. The trust serves over 275,000 people with a catchment area of approximately 600 square miles. In 2018 it was one of seven trusts nationwide to be awarded Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It has a very experienced general surgical department covering multiple subspecialties. Previous trainees of all levels have always reported high operative numbers from both elective and emergency procedures.

 

 

Subspecialty training opportunities

 

  • UGI - Perform specialist benign UGI procedures including laparoscopic fundoplications and CBD explorations (2 consultants). Training opportunities in laparoscopic ultrasound.
  • Colorectal - Busy colorectal cancer service including pelvic floor procedures (5 consultants). 
  • Breast - Breast and endocrine servive (3 consultants). One consultant specialising in oncolo-plastics including therapeutic mammoplasties, liposuction and implant reconstruction.
