The NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) is a clinical specialty training post that incorporates academic training.  

This post has a standard duration of 3 years (4 years for GPs). Alternatively, it can be taken part-time and extended up to a maximum of 5 years (or 6 years for GPs), as long as the academic component remains at 25% whole time equivalent. 

You will have access to Masters-level research training to develop your academic skills and equip you to balance your clinical academic career.

As an ACF you will spend:

  • 75% of your time in specialist clinical training
  • 25% of your time in research or educationalist training.

To be eligible for an ACF you must be:

  • Medically or dentally qualified
  • At the early stages of speciality training
  • Able to demonstrate outstanding potential for a career in academic medicine or dentistry
  • Able to meet the clinical specification for the advertised post.

Person Specifications and Eligibility Criteria

Please check the relevant Clinical Person Specification for 2020 to ascertain whether your are eligible to apply. 

2020 ACF NIHR Person Specification will be availble within the NIHR Guidance for Recruitment and Appointment.

Longlisting: All application forms will be checked to decide whether they are eligible to go forward to the shortlisters. The longlisting will look to see that you meet the following areas of the relevant person specification:
1. You possess the qualifications required 
2. You have the correct amount of experience for the specialty and level you are applying to 
3. You have fully completed all the relevant sections of the application form and
4. Your immigration status allows you to work in the UK*

*You are eligible to be considered for training in Round 1 if:

  • You are a UK or EEA national
  • You are a non-UK or non-EEA national and your immigration status allows you to work without restriction in the UK. For example, if you have Tier 1 or dependent status, and no restriction against working as a doctor or dentist in training
  • You are a non-UK or non-EEA national who has limited leave to remain in the UK and do not fall into one of the above categories. You will require Tier 2 sponsorship and will be subject to the Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT)
  • You are a non-UK or non-EEA national, you graduated from a UK medical or dental school, your immigration status currently entitles you to work in the Foundation Programme and where you would have previously been eligible for Tier 1 (PSW). You will need to apply for Tier 2 sponsorship, but you will be exempt from the RLMT in this instance.

Evidence of immigration status should normally consist of a biometric residence card, date stamped passport, and accompanying letter from the Home Office. Please visit their website for more information.

If it is determined that your application does not meet the required standard, your application will not proceed to the shortlisting stage.
