Hospital Profile
Addenbrooke’s Hospital is an internationally renowned 1000-bed teaching hospital with one of the most extensive surgical departments in the country. Within General Surgery, there is Colorectal, UGI (Benign/Malignant), HPB, Transplant, Breast/Endocrine and Vascular Surgery. Addenbrooke’s Hospital is also a major regional trauma unit receiving trauma directly and via transfer from peripheral hospital within East of England by ambulance or helicopter (HEMS).
The hospital is affiliated with Cambridge University and is home to the university’s Clinical School. There are strong academic opportunities within the hospital including formal postgraduate research during surgical training. Addenbrooke’s Hospital often hosts regional general surgery registrar teaching days throughout the year as well as relevant courses and FRCS examinations.
Subspecialty training opportunities
- UGI - Oesophago-Gastric cancer unit including genetic gastric cancer service. Perform a combination of open and minimally invasive oncological resections (5 consultants)
- Colorectal - Colorectal cancer and benign service including pouch surgery, pelvic exenterations and advanced abdominal wall reconstructive procedures (8 consultants)
- Breast - Busy breast unit performing cancer and benign cases (3 consultants). Advanced oculo-plastics procedures joint with Plastics.
- HPB - Large HPB unit (6 consultants) performing open and minimally invasive oncological resections
- Transplant - Internationally renowned transplant unit performing kidney, liver, pancreas and multivisceral transplantation
- Vascular - Established vascular unit performing wide range of venous and arterial procedures.
