Addenbrooke’s Hospital is an internationally renowned 1000-bed teaching hospital with one of the most extensive surgical departments in the country. Within General Surgery, there is Colorectal, UGI (Benign/Malignant), HPB, Transplant, Breast/Endocrine and Vascular Surgery. Addenbrooke’s Hospital is also a major regional trauma unit receiving trauma directly and via transfer from peripheral hospital within East of England by ambulance or helicopter (HEMS).

 

The hospital is affiliated with Cambridge University and is home to the university’s Clinical School. There are strong academic opportunities within the hospital including formal postgraduate research during surgical training.  Addenbrooke’s Hospital often hosts regional general surgery registrar teaching days throughout the year as well as relevant courses and FRCS examinations.

Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB):

  • Large HPB unit performing open and minimally invasive oncological resections.

  • The unit performs 140 liver resections, and 120 pancreatic resections a year. In addition to providing RFA treatment for liver tumours.

Ipswich Hospital is a large District General Hospital founded in 1989. It has recently merged services with Colchester Hospital, both of which are managed by the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust. The general surgical department includes Colorectal, UGI (benign), Breast and Vascular surgery. The department is particular popular with junior registrar trainees who obtain good volume elective and emergency surgery training.

James Paget Hospital is a district general hospital based in Norfolk that covers a population of 230,000 residing in Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Waveney. It has strong affiliations with the University of East Anglia. The General Surgical department based at James Paget is well-established with enthusiastic consultant trainers including the TPD (Ms Sarah Downey). The hospital is reputed for good operating logbook numbers as per feedback from numerous previous trainees within the region.

Lister Hospital – East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

 

Hospital Profile

 

Lister Hospital is a large 730 bed (18 Level 3 ITU care beds)  District General Hospital based in Stevenage. The surgical department includes 5 Colorectal, 1 UGI, 4 Breast and 4 Emergency Surgery consultants. The vascular department includes 7 consultants. Peripheral clinics occur at the QEII Hospital and Hertford County Hospital.

Trainees frequently give good feedback and gain plenty of operative exposure and teaching. There is a supportive education centre on site.

Luton and Dunstable Hospital is a large 695-bed district general hospital that serves a population of more than 350,000 in the surrounding geographical region. It has the only Bariatric unit in the East of England deanery and hence a popular rotation for UGI trainees. Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country and one of the major teaching hospitals within the East of England deanery. There is a large general surgical department including tertiary referrals for various operations including pelvic exenterations and gastric/oesophageal malignancies. On call commitments include 12-hour day and night on call shifts. The day on calls are split into 2-2-3 pattern, i.e. Monday-Tuesday, Wednesday-Thursday and Friday-Sunday. Night on-calls are a 4-3 split (Monday-Thursday and Friday-Sunday). On-calls are generally high volume and busy, the trust is routinely in the top 10% nationally for the number of emergency laparotomies performed. During the week day the on-call team comprises of an ‘On-Take’ consultant, an Emergency Surgical Assessment Unit (ESAU) consultant, a separated NCEPOD consultant, a surgical registrar, a surgical FY2/Trust grade SHO and two surgical FY1s.
