Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge
1000-bed internationally renowned teaching hospital, the region’s Major Trauma Centre, is a central part of the CUH Biomedical Campus with excellent facilities for trainees. Plastic surgery, with the exception of Craniofacial and Burns, manages the breadth of conditions seen by our specialty with consultant firms that trainees rotate through in an established order (determined by where you start):
- Head & neck (6 months) – Richard Price / Amer Durrani / Animesh Patel
The Head and Neck Plastic Surgeons deal with reconstruction of intra-oral cancer resection defects, pharyngeal defects, skull base tumours, and post-neurosurgery reconstructions. They provide the sentinel lymph node biopsy service for head/neck melanomas and reconstruction of complex skin cancers of the head and neck region. They also carry out neck lymphadenectomy for patients with metastatic skin cancers.
- Paeds & Cleft (3 months) – Mr Per Hall / Mr Tariq Ahmad / Miss Linda Treharne
Cleft.NET.East is the regional cleft lip and palate service for East Anglia. All surgeries for patients in East Anglia are carried out at Addenbrooke's Hospital, with various outreach clinics throughout the region.
- Burns (3 months) – at St Andrews Centre
All trainees will rotate to the Regional Burns Unit at Broomfield Hospital
- Breast (6 months) – Charles Malata / Michael Irwin / Sarah Benyon
The Breast Reconstruction Plastic Surgeons have close links with the Cambridge Breast Unit and provide the full range of reconstructive breast surgery.
- Hands & Trauma (6 months) – Ian Grant / Patrick Gillespie / Ahid Abood / Animesh Patel / Keith Anderson / Tereze Laing
The department provides a comprehensive Hand Surgery service. There are daily consultant-led trauma lists. Elective hand surgery is carried out at Addenbrooke's Hospital and at Ely Day Hospital. As well dealing with common hand surgery problems (carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, Dupuytren's disease, thumb base OA) special interest areas within the department include congenital hands (Mr Grant) and wrist pathologies (Mr Gillespie).
Addenbrooke's is also a tertiary referral centre for advanced colorectal/urological cancers, and patients undergoing total pelvic exenteration requiring pelvic/perineal reconstruction are managed by Mr Durrani/Mr Gillespie/Mr Patel.
All consultants see patients with skin cancers, and the department provides a sentinel lymph node biopsy for melanoma and lymphadenectomy service (carried out by Mr Durrani/Mr Abood/Mr Anderson/Ms Laing/Mr Patel).
There is a weekly departmental teaching program on Monday mornings, a monthly teaching afternoon as part of audit days and trainees will have excellent opportunities to take part in local audits, teaching and research.
From February 2019, there are 8 StRs and 1 middle grade Clinical Fellow on the on-call rota. There is also a Microsurgery Fellow, a TIG Cleft Fellow and a TIG Hand Fellow. There are 9 junior doctors at Core Trainee level (2 of whom are Anatomy Demonstrators at the University of Cambridge Medical School) who are not required to cross-cover other specialties.
Lister (Stevenage)
This 720-bed district general hospital serves much of Hertfordshire and south Bedfordshire. A distinctive feature of this unit is that the Plastic Surgery Service manages all hand fractures so there is plenty of opportunity to build hand trauma operative experience.
The department consists of 8 consultants, 6 registrars, 1 associate specialist, 3 core-trainees and 4 clinical fellows. Consultant firms rotate every 3-6 months following discussion with Mr Javaid and Mr Ikram (Associate Specialist):
Skin – Mr N James, Miss M Daruwalla
Breast – Mr M Dickson, Mr M Javaid, Mr H Ridha, Mr F Ahmad
Hands – Mr F Schreuder, Mr S Papanastasiou, Mr P Goon
Protected consultant-delivered teaching is on Fridays 8-9am followed by a consultant-led grand round and paediatric dressing clinic.
Rota is 1 in 7, non-resident 24 hour on call with the following afternoon free. Weekend on call includes a dedicated trauma list on Saturday and Sunday. Following a weekend on call, registrars have the Monday afternoon free.
A typical registrar week consists of consultant operating list (1 day), two consultant clinics (2 x 0.5 day), dressing clinic (0.5 day), trauma list (0.5 day), emergency list (0.5 day), local anaesthetic list (0.5 day), grand round (0.5 day).

Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust consists of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Cromer District Hospital. Founded in 2001 it has 987 acute beds and offers a wide range of NHS acute health services plus private patient facilities. The university hospital replaced the former Norfolk & Norwich Hospital (founded in 1771) and the West Norwich Hospital.
The Trust carries out nearly 1 million outpatient appointments, day case procedures and inpatient admissions annually. The staff of more than 7,000 provides acute hospital care to a tertiary catchment area of up to 822,500 people.

Junior Doctors
Registrars are predominantly paired with two consultants rotating every six months. The ratio of registrars to consultants presents considerable opportunity for training in supervised elective lists. A band 1B rolling on-call Rota and rolling hot week trauma registrar Rota - provide regular exposure to trauma with daily Monday-Friday trauma lists. Registrars will have at least one independent local anaesthetic day surgery list a week. Clinics are consultant-specific or conducted in a multi-disciplinary setting.
The registrars do a 24 hour on-call on weekdays and a 48 hour on-call on weekends. The SHO’s do a 12 hour shift pattern on-call and cross cover with ENT on nights.
Peripheral clinics and lists are conducted at Cromer, King’s Lynn, James Paget and Ipswich District General Hospitals. A vehicle and valid driving license is highly advised.
Locations
The Plastics ward is Earsham Ward located on the 4th floor in the Central Wing; the Outpatient Clinics, Plastic Dressing Clinic, Consultants and Secretaries offices are located on the 2nd floor in the West Wing.
Teaching
Departmental teaching occurs every Monday. Viva practice occurs from 07:30-08:00am and is consultant led. From 10:00-12:00pm registrar led teaching occurs as a power point presentation format based on topics from the FRCS Plast syllabus. Regional teaching occurs five times a year and rotates through each unit in the region.
The department has a history of innovation and pioneering work in many of the facets of plastic surgery and maintains strong links with the University of East Anglia to facilitate research interests.

History:
St Andrews takes its name from the hospital in Billericay where the burns and plastics unit was originally located. St Andrew's Hospital started life as a Victorian workhouse and become the regional plastic surgery and rehabilitation unit following the opening of a new general hospital in Basildon. These units opened in May 1973. By the early 1990s the hospital buildings were in need of extensive redevelopment and after long negotiations on 1 April 1995 the St. Andrews Centre become part of the Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust. The internationally renowned St Andrews regional plastic surgery service now covers a population of 3.2 million and the regional burns service services a population of 9.8 million. The Unit had 67 beds.
Current service:
Currently there are 21 substantive consultants and 2 locum consultants covering the full range of plastic surgery subspecialties and the unit continues to expand.
There are 12 registrars, 12 fellows (post CCT/senior reg level), 12 SHO’s and 2 research fellows. The registrar on call service is full shift with two tiers, split between covering the burns unit and trauma service. There is ample opportunity for operating with multiple general anesthetic (some of which are three session lists), local anaesthetic and peripheral hospital lists daily Monday through Saturday. All consultants and registrars will have peripheral hospital commitments both clinics and operating lists so a car is essential.
A typical registrar week will include at least one full day of GA operating (which may be a three session list), at least one local anesthetic lists, 1-3 clinics, and at least one day at a peripheral hospital (clinic/operating). Depending on the on call cycle there is usually a half day a week rota’d for private study.
Teaching:
There is teaching three mornings a week at 07.30am (Tuesdays, Thursday, and Friday). The Programme is varied with consultant, registrar and SHO input. In addition there is a monthly clinical governance meeting which includes audit, M&M and interesting cases/invited speakers. The journal club occurs every two months and is a sponsored event at a local restaurant.
