Workforce, training and education
East of England

The West Suffolk Hospital is a busy District General Hospital built in 1974, we sit on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds, a picturesque historic market town. It serves a very stable population of around 275,000 in the western part of Suffolk and Southern part of West Norfolk.

At any given time we have 8 CMTs plus 1 ACCS post, as part of the "Addenbrooke's and Associated Rotations". Most trainees will spend at least 8 months at West Suffolk with many spending a full year there.

Why are we so popular? Apart from the canteen’s infamous scones! Our size is our strength. We work together as an integrated team, and everyone knows everybody.

We are a busy DGH, where you will experience ‘coal face’ medicine, but in a positive supportive environment, providing you with vital clinical experience whilst giving ample opportunity to populate your portfolio with MiniCEXs and ACATs aplenty!

Whilst we work you hard, we recognise your need and desire for knowledge. Structured education is readily available on a weekly basis, ranging from the weekly x-ray teaching & post grad lecture, to the curriculum-based weekly CMT teaching and journal club, which provide your opportunity to practice your presentation skills.

Intensive consultant-led bedside teaching is organised for each PACES diet.

Free access to Medical Masterclass, as per the EoE deanery policy, is readily available through our excellent postgraduate centre.

All medical wards operate an ‘admit all’ policy with no age barriers.

The current placements include:

Respiratory (2 CMTs & 1 ACCS):
