The new Royal Papworth Hospital

Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the largest specialist cardiothoracic (heart and lung) hospital in the UK and includes the country’s main heart and lung transplant centre. The hospital treats over 24,000 patients and sees nearly 74,000 outpatients each year from across the UK. Its services are internationally recognized and include cardiology, respiratory medicine, sleep medicine and cardiac and thoracic surgery, including heart & lung transplantation.

Papworth Hospital is currently located in Papworth Everard in Cambridgeshire. However, building of a New Papworth, a 310-bed, 100% single room, and purpose-built cardio-thoracic centre on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus began in 2015 and is due for completion in April 2019 when all services will be relocated. In addition, a state of the art Research and Education Institute will be built together with the University of Cambridge. Papworth has also recently been granted royal title be the Queen.

IM trainees will be attached for 4-8 month placements in either cardiology, respiratory medicine or intensive care. A dedicated Education Department ensures a high standard of teaching that is adaptable to the needs of the trainees including dedicated bleep free teaching sessions from consultants in their area of expertise. A regular junior doctors’ forum provides a mechanism for feedback to ensure the teaching meets trainee’s requirements. The introduction of a twice-monthly Grand Round has proved hugely popular.

In addition to the curriculum-based teaching there are weekly general cardiology and electrophysiology academic meetings and regular cardiology bedside teaching. There are also weekly electrophysiology MDT meetings.

Within respiratory medicine there are weekly MDT meetings covering the specialist areas including oncology, pulmonary vascular disease, cystic fibrosis and complex lung infection, interstitial lung disease and domiciliary ventilatory support and sleep. A timetabled consultant led journal club is held weekly. There is a well-resourced on-site library plus electronic access to many journals and books.

Papworth Hospital posts form part of the "Addenbrooke's and Associated Rotations".
