Health / Self Isolation

I am a trainee and am classed as high risk, what should I do?

If you have not already done so, please seek advice from your Educational supervisor, NHS 111 and / or your local OH provider in order for them to conduct an appropriate risk assessment. Health Education England take the health of trainees very seriously and would advise trainees to follow the advice and guidance of NHS 111 and PHE.

Should you require time off sick, please follow the Trusts normal absence reporting processes.

GP Trainees must also inform the Lead Employer.

I am pregnant and not sure whether I should self-isolate.

We are keen to support our trainees who are pregnant, recognising that many of you will want to do all you can to support your colleagues, whilst prioritising your own health.   We strongly recommend that you undertake a risk assessment through your employer/OH department. We are working with Trusts and other colleagues to identify a suite of non-patient facing roles such as working in Public Health, providing telephone triage as part of NHS 111 services and undertaking telephone out-patient clinics. We have also had examples of trainees moving to work in hospice or psychiatry placements, where the risk assessment has allowed.  Please contact covid-19.psw.eoe@hee.nhs.uk  if you would like any more information.

Should you require time off sick while pregnant, please follow the normal absence reporting processes.

GP Trainees must also inform the Lead Employer.

You may also find the RCOG guidance useful.

I have already spent 4 months in an acute specialty and am at risk of burnout if I continue for another 4 months, what support is available?

The Professional Support and Wellbeing Service is committed to ensuring trainees are supported and don’t burn out during this period. We have been working with our external providers to ensure that support services can still be offered in the current climate.

Due to the increased demand, we have also sent out comms to all trainees to inform them of our decision to accept self-referrals for the foreseeable future. If you feel that you would benefit from support, please complete the 'Form C' Self referral and email it to COVID19-PSW.EoE@hee.nhs.uk.

I suffer from anxiety and the COVID-19 pandemic is exacerbating Symptoms, can I access support?

The Professional Support and Well-being Service are able to provide fast access to Skype based Psychological support during this time in order to help trainees develop coping mechanisms. If you feel you would benefit from this, please email COVID19-PSW.EoE@hee.nhs.uk

Rotations

Are Foundation and GP trainees still able to rotate on 1st April?

Following the issuing of letters to all Foundation and GP trainees on 19/03/2020 (a copy of which can be found here) please follow this advice. If your query still cannot be answered, please contact your Training Programme Director (TPD) who can assist you further. There is some variance in local areas and therefore, the TPD is best placed to provide this clarity.

Any further decisions or updates in relation to rotations will be communicated accordingly.

I am in a supernumerary post (i.e. Psychiatry) currently and am therefore unsure if I should rotate as planned or offer assistance elsewhere.

If you are currently in a Psychiatry post, please wait for further instructions from the Trust who will redeploy you accordingly.

If you are a GP or foundation trainee and are still unclear as to whether or not you should be rotating, please contact your Training Programme Director (TPD) who can provide further advice.
