Refugee doctors
Health Education East of England recognises that refugee doctors have particular challenges to face as International Medical Graduates (IMG) in the UK.
Sources of help for refugee and asylum-seeking healthcare professionals:
The British Medical Association (BMA) provides regularly updated information for refugee doctors wanting to re-qualify in the UK. They have established the Refugee Doctor Initiative to provide a free package of benefits for refugee doctors who are working towards GMC registration. More information on how to register for this is available on the BMA website. Other useful BMA links also found below.
Careers advice for International healthcare professionals is available from the NHS Careers website. This contains information for overseas qualified UK/European Economic Area (EEA) and non-EEA healthcare professionals by career group, including information on registration and immigration.
Further guidance for refugee doctor seeking registration with a licence to practise in the United Kingdom is available from the General medical Council (GMC).
CARA’s UK Programme provides assistance to enable persecuted academics residing in the UK (as asylum seekers, refugees, international students etc.) to return to academia or an allied profession at a level commensurate with their skills and experience. More information is available on their CARA website.
If you go to our main International Medical Graduate Hub page you will see further advice on how to Register with the GMC, English speaking exams, PLAB clinical exam and other sources of advice / help.
