Cataract Simulation
There is a strong emphasis on simulation training in cataract surgery in the Eastern region. We have 3 EyeSi virtual-reality cataract surgery simulators, which are based around the region at: James Paget University Hospital, Great Yarmouth; Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge; and Luton & Dunstable Hospital, Luton. You will have a program of training in your first year on the rotation, with supervised structured modular training using the EyeSi simulator. You can also arrange additional simulator sessions by contacting the lead in each unit.
James Paget : Tom Butler
Addenbrookes : John Somner
Luton & Dunstable : Jonathan Barnes
In addition, there are regular microsurgical skills courses in the management of complications of cataract surgery, held at the wet lab facility at James Paget University Hospital, Great Yarmouth. These courses incorporate various simulation models including artificial eyes (Phillips Studios) with a vitreous simulation model and Bausch & Lomb® Stellaris phacoemulsification machines; pig eyes; and the EyeSi virtual-reality simulator which now has a new anterior vitrectomy module. Access to this course is given preferentially to trainees from the Eastern Region rotation. [link to course programme example]. The course is led by Tom Butler, Consultant Ophthalmologist, James Paget University Hospital & Regional Simulation Lead.
