Moving and/or Changing Rotations
Inter foundation School Transfer (Moving to a different Foundation School)
To qualify for an Inter Foundation School Transfer (IFST), you must be able to provide evidence that your circumstances have changed unexpectedly since your initial application and that you have an unanticipated need to be in a specific location. The criteria are very strict and are followed closely. Please refer to the Inter-foundation School Transfer Process - UK Foundation Programme
This is national process and opens in spring for an August start
Completed applications should be sent to Foundation Programmes (EoE)

Intra foundation school transfer (Moving Trust within the same Foundation School)
Each year we have a few trainees that do require to move trusts for very specific and valid reasons between F1 and F2. We review the indications for movement along the lines of the IFST transfer process. If you fall into this category, we suggest discussing this with your FTPD first. If this is not possible, or you feel uncomfortable, please contact the programmes team and the relevant deputy FSD (contact details below). We will need you to provide the information to support your request and will ask to meet you. Our F2 posts are advertised for LAT recruitment in March, and so we will need to have your request wherever possible by February. There may not be a suitable post, and we may be unable to facilitate a transfer.
If our PSW has strongly recommended a transfer, then we make every effort to accommodate this.
No-swap placement policy
In 2018, following discussion between the Post Graduate Dean and BMA representation an agreement was made that there are now no swaps during foundation training, except those with exceptional need. Career needs can be managed with taster weeks. Exceptional need would require the robust evidence as per the IFST route and very early discussion from your FTPD/FSD and the PSW team.
We recommend that trainees review where their community placements are situated, learn to drive, check public transport etc so that they can attend work. This is particularly the case with GP placements as they are often rural.
Out of Program (OOP)
If trainees need to take time out due to personal reasons, we can support an Out of Program career Break (OOPC). This would need discussing with your FTPD who will escalate it to the Deputy FSD.
Out of Programme (OOP) | East of England (hee.nhs.uk)
OOP(C) is for a maximum of one year. You would not be able to resume your original placement, but we will do our best to accommodate you. Whilst OOP we ask you to keep in contact with your Deputy FSD and your local trust team.
Leaving before completing the Foundation Program
Each year some trainees relinquish their training post prior to completing F2 for a variety of reasons. We recommend that all such trainees read the latest information about applying for higher training, as they will need to complete their Foundation programme in a recognised post [not a LAS or trust doctor post].
If you do resign from the Foundation Program and subsequently want to apply for speciality training in the UK, you will need to demonstrate that you have ‘Foundation Competence.
Foundation competencies | Medical Hub (hee.nhs.uk)
If you are leaving your training programme you must have an ARCP with your FTPD and provide a Form R, you will be given an outcome code of N21- resignation with no training issues or N22- Resignation with training issues.
You must notify the Trust HR Department, the Deputy FSD for your region, and the Foundation Programme Management Team england.foundationprogrammes.eoe@nhs.net
