East of England
Paediatric Undergraduate Regional Educators

Are you an East of England Paediatric Trainee who is passionate about paediatrics and interested in delivering teaching?

Have you heard of this unique opportunity to add a collaboration with Health Education England (East of England) School of

Paediatrics, the University of Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin University, and the University of East Anglia to your portfolio?

PURE (the Paediatric Undergraduate Regional Educators Programme) is a project in the East of England, which needs Paediatric Educators to deliver small group teaching sessions to undergraduate medical students.

Educators participating in the programme can expect to receive feedback and mentoring from members of the PURE community as well as training and support for their teaching.

The PURE Community includes qualified Paediatric consultants, experienced teaching leads within the medical education sector and Paediatric Educators from previous years.

Share our vision

Our long-term goal is to expand the PURE programme to every trust within the East of England, so that all paediatric trainees have the opportunity to develop their teaching, leadership and organisation skills.

And so that all medical students can reap the benefits of receiving peer group teaching sessions from junior doctors who can enthuse and sympathise about the rewards and challenges that come with a career in paediatrics.

Until then, our aim is to recruit as many traineesas possible who have or will be rotating into the Trusts who are currently taking this journey with us. Trainees must have a work contract with the trust they apply for. These are:

1. Queen Elizabeth (King’s Lynn)

2. Norfolk and Norwich

3. James Paget

4. West Suffolk

5. Ipswich

6. Colchester

7. Mid Essex (Broomfield)

8. Southend

9. Basildon

10. Princess Alexandra (Harlow)

11. Lister (Stevenage)

12. Bedford

13. Hinchingbrooke

14. Peterborough & Stamford

Trainees working from Cambridge may apply to the Cambridge Clinical Supervisor Programme, by contacting the administrator, Vanessa Karbach at paedsundergrads@medschl.cam.ac.uk

We may also accept applications from non-trainees, based upon the needs of each trust.

Don’t worry if PURE hasn’t reached your trust yet.

PURE is a peer based movement, the more trainees who sign up or express an interest in teaching with PURE, the more we can add to our ever growing reserve list, and the closer we get to developing a programme which can accommodate all trusts.

Provide feedback

As a Paediatric Educator, we need you to deliver bedside teaching sessions to a small group of students during their Child Health attachment at one of the above trusts.

Sessions will be at least one hour in duration and will focus on the clinical assessment of children and young people, covering the following learning outcomes:

  • Perform a structured examination of the respiratory system.
  • Perform a developmental assessment in a child under 5 years old.

And a choice between the below outcomes for you and your students:

  • Perform a structured examination of the cardiovascular or gastrointestinal system.
  • Perform a structured examination of the central and peripheral nervous system or musculoskeletal system.

As an essential part of these sessions, you will provide the students with positive and constructive feedback to reinforce their knowledge and identify areas for improvement on their examination skills. Planning of the sessions is flexible.

Receive guidance on your teaching

The PURE programme aims to provide a structured framework for you to build your skills, knowledge and confidence in teaching, self-reflection, time management, and leadership.

To reward your commitment to our pilot, we can offer:

  • A PURE faculty led training evening on medical education including an introduction to the programme, medical school curricula overview, small group teaching skills and workshops.
  • Feedback from your students to keep for your portfolio.
  • Opportunities to receive mentoring from mentoring from experienced members of the PURE community, including review of a reflective log to be kept by the educators.
  • Observed teaching feedback by PURE educator peers or the regional teaching leads in Paediatrics.
