Individual Requirements

Named Courses

During the recent revisions of curricula to make them capability-based, most mandated courses have been removed from curricula, the main exceptions being some life support courses. This means that almost all courses are now aspirational (or “discretionary” in the latest terminology) and will require completion of an aspirational request form. We are therefore planning to review the lists of “approved courses” and have removed them until this work has been completed.

ALS Guidance

Please note that this guidance applies only to adult advanced life support courses and not to other life support courses

It has been agreed by HEE nationally, in consultation with other stakeholders, that a blended learning approach (one day each of distance and face-to face learning) is the preferred option for postgraduate doctors in training (PGDiTs) to demonstrate adult advanced life support capabilities. The reasons for this are to reduce demands on faculty time and to reduce costs, so that more funding is available for other study leave-related activities. We would therefore encourage PGDiTs to apply for a blended learning adult advanced life support course, where this is locally available. Similarly, can we ask supervisors to direct PGDiTs to blended learning courses, where they are locally available. We recognise that it will not always be possible to book on to a blended learning course, in which case trainees will need to book on to a two days’ face-to-face course.

Further guidance on the funding of adult advanced life support courses is being developed nationally. In the interim, PGDiTs will be reimbursed for the full costs of the adult advanced life support course that they attend.
