The team

I have worked in this role since 2020 but have been working in the NHS for much longer. I really enjoy watching our trainees develop, over the course of their training, in to fully qualified GPs. I work Monday to Friday so I am readily available to answer questions and support trainees and trainers alike. Outside work, I love to spend time in the great outdoors with my family and friends!

I have been TPD since 2017  and a GP in central Peterborough since 2002 so I guess I know the terrain pretty well. I enjoy time outside- observing nature, cycling,  time in the garden, cooking on the bbq and travel.

I've been in the programme director role since the start of 2021 (and completed my own speciality training in Peterborough). I am passionate about education and training. My focus has been on expanding the programme both in the number of trainees we can support and the trainers and training practices we have. I have also worked across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, supporting international medical graduates as they settle into GP training. I undertake my training role on a Tuesday and work in the city centre as a GP for the rest of my working week. Outside of work you will find me travelling, enjoying live music and working as a personal assistant to my two daughters!

As a team we endeavour to offer easy access to ourselves to support you during your training. We will signpost you to the relevant individual or team where we are unable to help. We aim to run a supportive training programme and will take the time to meet with you on Tuesdays - in the morning by appointment (at a time convenient to yourself) or informally in the afternoon during the half day release session.

Half-Day Release

Our teaching programme runs on a Tuesday afternoon (during term time) 1.30pm - 4.30pm, which all trainees on the scheme are expected to attend as part of their contract.  We also run an annual, full day, communication skills course supported by actors as patients.

An important aim is for trainees to become accustomed to planning their own learning.  The Training Programme Directors (TPDs) see the trainee group as being responsible for organising its own programme with guidance available about resources, educational methods and important areas that should be covered. We see acquisition of knowledge as only a small part of the course. Perhaps more important is the recognition of the shift of emphasis in General Practice from, for example, the disease to the patient, and from an hierarchical to a team approach to medical practice.  Trainees are given every opportunity to feedback on each session held. Our sessions range from clinical topics to managing wellbeing and finances!

These sessions also act as a valuable opportunity to spend time with your peers and the opportunity to access the training programme directors face to face on a regular basis.

Summary of the Course

There is one intake a year, starting in August for the 3 year scheme and 23 Registrars are appointed each year.  Rotations are generally 3 x 4 month posts in hospital medicine for ST1. Each trainee will then spend the ST2 and ST3 years in a general practice setting. Trainees will be assigned to two contrasting practices. Details can be seen below.
