Workforce, training and education
East of England

The Peterborough GP speciality training programme is covered by a wide range of medical practices, spanning 34 miles East to West and 23 miles North to South. It comprises inner-city practices, surburban areas, market towns and villages. The area has some of the highest deprivation in the area alongside pockets of affluence. Each practice contributes to our training programme with over 50 trainers. Many of whom completed their GP training locally and all of which are dedicated to supporting GP trainees within excellent learning organisations. Below is a list of the GP practices that are currently learning organisations within our area.  Each has provided their own summary of their practice.

Oundle Medical Practice

Oundle Medical Practice is a friendly surgery in the thriving market town of Oundle, Northamptonshire. It has a patient population of over 10,500, including residents plus students at the renowned Oundle School.  It is the blend of history and modernity that makes a placement at Oundle so special, plus the opportunity to have student accommodation in neighbouring Barnwell, with transport available for those that need it.  Our modern surgery sits alongside bustling amenities including the library, community hub and good parking facilities. The beautiful town centre of Oundle is just a short walk away.  Oundle Medical Practice comprises a relatively new team of GP Partners, with four out of six of our doctors joining over the last couple of years. This has given a dynamism in our approach and expanded our areas of interest. It means we have a wide range of specialisms to share with students, including women’s health, dermatology, joint injections, wellbeing, preventative medicine and how clinical research and AI can impact the way we work.  We have a varied patient population and a catchment encompassing rural and urban areas. Oundle is a thriving, upmarket town surrounded by smaller communities with agriculture being a mainstay for many. In Oundle we provide all the usual services to expectant mums, babies, school children and the general population through to caring for our geriatric patients in the community and local care homes. A placement at Oundle will ensure you get to see a full range of patients and health concerns. We have two current Educational Supervisors, Dr Felix Morgan and Dr Laura Brennan while Dr Raj Naidoo is undergoing his training to boost our educational capacity. We aim to make your placement a valuable and practical experience, with lots of support and feedback.  We have a close knit and long-serving nursing team including Community Advanced Nurse Practitioners, a Lead Nurse, Practice Nurses, a Nurse Associate and Healthcare Assistants.  We also have a very busy Dispensary team who are very experienced and a Personalised Care Team of social prescribers and care co-ordinators who help patients with fitness and lifestyle advice.  We have a new and enthusiastic Practice Manager who is very much a ‘people person’ and our Administrative and Patient Services team have a friendly manner and can-do attitude.  Whatever our role we aim to give every patient our best service. We recently held an Open Event which was attended by hundreds of patients. It gave them a chance to learn more about us as a team, and to hear about what we do.  We really enjoyed showcasing our staff and services and welcoming people along, and we aim to do the same for our medical students too!

Oundle Medical Practice is part of Lakeside Healthcare, a large GP partnership that provides NHS care for around 170,000 patients across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Northamptonshire. It comprises eight GP practices across 14 sites that are all part of their local communities. We work together as practices to provide resilience, sharing learning and professional back-office support services. We strive to demonstrate our values of Caring, Respect, Quality and Teamwork in everything we do.  Oundle is ideally located as there are good transport links to Peterborough, Cambridge and beyond, but a placement here means that you will be able to spend quality time in the quaint town centre.  It is brimming with historic stone buildings, independent shops, pubs, restaurants and coffee shops. It is so picturesque that it was used as a location on The Crown series by Netflix, and the stately home which featured in the hit film, Saltburn, is just a few miles up the road.  The National Trust property, Lyveden New Bield, is also a popular local destination and well worth a visit.  There is also a local Heritage Trail and interactive Walking Tour app to help you make the most of exploring the town and its treasures, including antique shops, book shops and art galleries. Culture aside, there is a practical side with local supermarkets including Londis, Tesco Express, Co-op and Waitrose.  For fitness and wellbeing Oundle School Sports Centre offers a wide range of classes and activities on a pay as you go basis in their state-of-the-art facilities, which includes a swimming pool and gym. If you want something a little more sedate, then nearby Barnwell Country Park is the ideal setting to relax with riverside walks and a café. There is even a marina where you might spot a luxury yacht or two built by Fairline, based in the town.  As well as such illustrious connections Oundle also has an international reputation as the World Conker Championships take place every October in nearby Southwick attracting competitors from across the globe!

As you can see, Oundle is a busy and vibrant place, with lots to offer. Come and experience what makes it so special.  We’d be delighted to have you here.
