Emergency Medicine
Emergency Medicine is an exciting specialty which has grown rapidly over the past 50 years with consultants occupying a central position in hospital life, relating as they do to many specialties. It involves the initial resuscitation and clinical care for patients of all age groups and across the whole spectrum of clinical disease. Emergency Medicine forms a great foundation for diversifying into Intensive Care Medicine dual accreditation, Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine and Paediatric Emergency Medicine sub-specialisation, and interests in Geriatric Emergency Medicine, toxicology, ultrasound, medico-legal, events medicine. We work in fast moving, multidisciplinary teams that aim to deliver the highest standards of care to our patients. Not only do we need a breadth of clinical skills but we also champion the non-technical human factors that underpin modern medical practice.
EM Training in East of England
The East of England region provides a wide range of experience with two teaching hospitals, a major trauma centre and urban and rural DGHs. There is recognised training for subspecialisation in Paediatric Emergency Medicine and the region has pioneered the Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine training programme with local faculty who have been instrumental in setting the curriculum. There is also an Academic stream based in Addenbrookes Hospital.
Acknowledging the large geographical area that makes up the East of England, our training rotations are divided into sectors to minimise commuting throughout the programme. The sectors are as follows:
East: Norwich, Ipswich, Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn
North: Peterborough, Bedford, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds
South: Watford, Luton, Stevenage, Cambridge
Essex: Colchester, Southend, Basildon, Chelmsford, Harlow, Cambridge
Most ACCS placements are in the same Trust for the three years and the HST rotation will include at least 6 months in Addenbrookes for Major Trauma experience. We do endeavour to be flexible according to trainees' changing needs.
Along with local departmental teaching there are regional training programmes for each of the different levels - ACCS, ST3/DRE-EM, ST4-6 - reflecting the relevant curricula. There is a strong emphasis on high fidelity simulation and every ACCS trainee is able to sign up to an RCEM approved ACCS simulation course. ST3 trainees also have access to a PEM simulation day. Each of these regional programmes also includes an annual presentation day for trainees to showcase any extra academic work. Exam preparation courses are run regularly for all aspects of the FRCEM. We also run a Level 1 Ultrasound courses and finishing school for those needing sign-off. There is a cadaveric advanced surgical skills course that includes the practice of resuscitative thoracotomy. All of these are funded entirely by the deanery.
We provide a flexible approach to our trainees with regular approval for Out Of Programme activities both within the UK and overseas. The East of England is an early participant in the Global Health Fellowships programme with supported placements in rural South Africa between ST3 and ST4; completion of this placement allows the trainee to be listed on the UK-MED humanitarian response organisation. There is a strong emphasis on education and leadership with established programmes for Chief Resident and bursary support for PG certificate or diploma in medical education. Annually there is a Faculty Development Day where consultants and senior trainees come together to learn about and discuss wider issues such as recruitment, training, developments in EM, etc.. Trainees have a strong voice into the Specialty Training Committee and are invited to participate in department quality visits.
EMTA
As an Emergency Medicine trainee enrolled with RCEM, you are automatically a member of the Emergency Medicine Trainees' Association or EMTA. This group represents the views of Emergency Medicine trainees to RCEM, GMC, HEE and other bodies associated with medical training. There is a brief video introducing EMTA below.
