As Ashwell Dental Surgery’s reputation for quality care grew, in 2006 we expanded the practice from two surgeries to four in order to meet demand. Ashwell Dental Surgery is now part of the Dental Surgery Group of 7 practices in Hertfordshire, Cambridge and Essex..
I have a special interest in cosmetic dentistry and in September 2009 completed a year long course in cosmetic dentistry. I undertake the restorative part of implants and am also a Invisalign Go practitioner.
I have been mentoring young associates within our practices for several years now and hope to give my foundation dentist the best start to general practice.

March,
Cambridgeshire,
March Dental Dipali, along with her husband, owns and manages 6 dental practices in Cambridgeshire. She has been an ES for over 13 years and is passionate about nurturing the talent of new dentists. Her clinical strengths lie in restorative dentistry and extractions, and she does some facial aesthetic treatments. Her non-clinical strengths lie in complaints management, staff recruitment and training. Outside of dentistry she is mother to three young girls and is passionate about interior design. She understands the power of social media in both a professional and personal context and believes that it is quickly becoming a huge part of the future of dentistry. She and her husband are in the habit of supporting the progress of previous FDs to become super-associates - talented, high-grossing individuals who are doing innovative and exciting dentistry. She is on-site 2-3 days of the week and is not always seeing patients, so she uses those days to schedule joint procedures with the FD like crown preps where she can sit chairside for an hour and assist them, so they are not left alone. We have a lovely high street location, and have 9 brand state-of-the-art newly furnished surgeries. Each surgery has patient-facing TV screens to help discuss treatment plans with them, and are fully computerised. We have 2 intra-oral and facial scanners on site, which are available for the FD to use, as well as rotary endo kits, digital radiography, OPG and CBCT scanner as well as an endodontic microscope. The practice has been designed by Dipali personally, and is modern and luxurious in its appearance, much like the dentistry it provides. There are at least 4-5 other dentists working everyday, aside from the FD, so lots of help on hand. We have a team of 4 hygienists, and a large team of support staff from nurses and reception, a TCO and the manager to help the FD every stage of the way.
The team has a varied skill mix, in terms of their strengths, and we have team members that do implants, short-term orthodontics, extremely impressive cosmetic work and surgical extractions. Dipali herself also does facial aesthetics.
The FDs working hours are 9am to 5pm every day except Tuesday when they are usually on a scheme training day. When there is no training day, the FD has the Tuesday off and is not scheduled to work.
March is a market town and a hub of activity amongst the surrounding towns. It has easy train links into Cambridge, Peterborough, London and Birmingham, and the station is a short walk or car journey from the Practice. A lot of our previous FDs have chosen to move into town to ease the daily commute, and accommodation is relatively cheap compared to the bigger cities and very easy to find. Marzena lives in March and Dipali in Cambridge and her daily commute is 50 minutes by car. There is lots of free parking outside the surgery. Previous FDs have also chosen to live with other FDs from the area in a flat-share and commute in.
Our patients are made up of the local community mainly, and the practice has been part of that community for over 30 years. We see all kinds of patients from families to the elderly and everything in between. They are of mixed need, and being the only NHS practice in a large radius, we are never short of patients and have never before struggled to help the FD meet all their clinical quotas and get plenty of experience in every area of dentistry.
We want to be able to teach you not just to have a solid foundation of basic clinical skills but also learn how to do things in this rapidly developing world of dentistry by embracing new techniques, materials and ideas. By the end of the year our aim is for you to be able to be so competent and functional that you could walk into any associate job with confidence, possibly even one within our own practices - many of our previous FDs have chosen to stay on with us because of the happy and supportive working environment we provide.
Above all we are an extremely fun practice, we have each other's backs at work - help out to see a patient if they are running late or need help with a procedure. We socialise quite frequently as a practice and a lot of the team are also friendly outside of work. Despite our combined experience being extensive, we are a young team with lots of energy, a good work ethic and a great sense of humour. We have great banter everyday, we have lunch together as a team and we love what we do!

Midsummer Dental Originally from Bishop's Stortford and then graduating from the University of Sheffield in 2019, I knew I wanted to return to the East of England for my DFT year and beyond. After completing my DFT in one of the sister practices, I then moved to both Littleport Dental and Midsummer Dental. I have been an ES since 2024, and prior to that have helped colleagues in an unoffical capacity. I enjoy all aspects of dentistry, and am keen to use modern concepts to provide my patients with minimally invasive treatment. One of my favourite courses I have completed was the Totally Aesthetics PGDip in Aesthetic Restorative dentistry taught by Dr Monik Vasant; the skills and knowledge I gained has definitely ensured I can focus on improving a patient's smile in both a functional and aesthetic way. Amiras Chokshi BDS (Lond), PG Cert (Dental Ed) Amiras has been an ES for over 13 years. He owns and manages 6 dental practices across Cambridgeshire and is really passionate about the business of dentistry, having bought his first dental practice 2 years after graduating. He has a lot to offer a newly qualified dentist both in terms of clinical support as well as entrepreneurial guidance. He has a day when he is on site not seeing patients and on that day he tends to devote a lot of chairtime to the FD, scheduling in joint procedures like difficult extractions or preps. He is forward-thinking and has trained his previous FDs such that they go on to become super-associates - high-grossing clinicians that do amazing and innovative clinical dentistry. Outside of work he is into keeping fit, playing football and cycling whenever he is not spending his time with his 3 daughters. Winto Lau

Winto qualified in Cardiff in 2019 and joined the Midsummer team in 2022, after having completed a year of postgraduate training in the busy oral and maxillofacial department at Peterborough City Hospital, where he gained a lot of experience with complex extractions and oral medicine, and considers them his particular strength. He also has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry and has completed a year-long postgraduate qualification in cosmetic restorative dentistry, and can also straighten teeth with Invisalign. Midsummer Dental is a beautiful and busy practice providing both NHS and private dentistry. We attract a wide, and diverse demographic of patients and can thus offer a well-rounded experience in all types of dentistry. The multidisciplinary team consists of hygienists and dentists with special interests in short-term orthodontics, implants and various types of cosmetic dentistry. It is lead by a practice manager who is their day-to-day overseeing the care of patients and staff. We have 7 surgeries, which means that aside from the FD and the hygienists, there are at least 3-4 other dentists on site, many of them previous FDs, willing to provide help, support and friendship. Our nurses are all experienced, and friendly, looking forward to welcoming a new dentists onto the team. We are completely digital, both in terms of records and equipment with rotary endo kits, OPG machine, intra-oral scanners and cameras and the FD is allowed access to all of these things to encourage them to practice the highest standard of dentistry they can.
Cambridge, as a city, needs no introduction. The location of the practice is in the middle of Cambridge, close to the river. Cambridge is a university town with a thriving culture, beautiful architecture and plenty of places to eat and shop - with excellent train links to all of the UK. We are situated a walking distance from all the main sights of Cambridge, including the train station so it is commute-friendly. The beautiful architecture of the city is a nod to its long-standing history and our patients, as a result, will range from students, professors and alumni of the University, to families and other folk associated with Addenbrookes, the science parks and technology hubs. With plenty to offer in terms of restaurants, shopping and leisure, it is a fantastic place to work, make friends and build a life.
We are a young and outgoing team, all socialize outside of work regularly, which is nice for a young dentist coming into the city for the first time looking to make connections. We have regular team-building outings and trips to the pub after the work. As all the associates have been previous FDs, they are all willing to help. Amiras himself, and his wife Dipali, who are a part of the team, have over 13 years of ES experience each and have successfully mentored over 20 FDs between them. We have always ensured the FD hits all their clinical targets with ease, reach a stage where they can work independently as an associate, and help them with career development whether it is post-graduate training, practice ownership or developing their profile on social media as an aspiring dentist. My aim is to make them competent and confident so they can walk into any job they like, maybe even one within one of our group of practices.

Littleport Dental Surgery is a busy mixed NHS and Private practice with 5 dental surgeries. The practice has recently enjoyed a refurb and its new spa-like image is a source of much joy to both the team and patients. Aside from Amiras and Mohnisha, there are 5 other dentists, a hygienist, a practice manager, two receptionists and 7 dental nurses. A large team means plenty of support, even if the ESs are not on site, varied clinical interests and skillsets within the team and a great opportunity to make some friendships. We offer all types of treatment within the practice and have a long-established respected reputation within the local community that we strive to uphold. There is plenty of free off-street parking and we are walking distance from the quaint town centre. We have recently invested in the iTero intra-oral scanner which allows us to digitally take impressions and offer Invisalign treatment and teeth whitening. The FD working hours are between 8am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday, with Tuesday off for scheme study days. All the associates have been previous FDs at the practice so they are familiar with the training year and provide alot of support. All our nurses are qualified or mid-training and the FD will always have an experienced dental nurse assisting them chairside. All our previous FDs have successfully hit their clinical targets over the training year and have completed the year with experience in every clinical discipline so they leave competent and confident.
Littleport is a picturesque village close to Ely, Cambridgeshire. The local train station is walking distance from the practice and there are excellent train links to London, Cambridge and King's Lynn and Peterborough. Amiras himself lives in Cambridge, as have many of our previous FDs, and the daily commute is 40 minutes by car.
We are the only Dental Surgery in Littleport, which places us in a unique position and have become a respected pillar of the community. This also means that we have an abundance of patients coming through our door, and it has never been a problem for all of our previous FDs to be exposed to all kinds of dental work including crowns, bridges, dentures and surgical extractions. We have always met, often exceeded, all the quotas placed upon the FD during the year.

Peterborough Dental Access Centre After qualifying in Liverpool in 2018, I completed my FD year in Hertfordshire. Since then, I have worked in a mix of general practice and the Community Dental Service in London, Northampton and Cambridge. Dental Healthcare Cambridgeshire, Brookfields I'm one of the dentists working in the Special Care Dental Service in Cambridge. I have worked in Special Care since 2009, and find it a really interesting and rewarding job. Kuljeet Singh BDS BSc(Hons) PG Cert SCD DSCD RCS Eng I qualified as a Dentist from the University of Birmingham in 2003. Prior to this I had completed a BSc(Hons) degree in Pharmacology from King's College London & was originally due to train as a teacher until I worked at a dental surgery one summer. I became a VT (now FD) in the East of England Peterborough scheme which I immensely enjoyed & stayed working in Peterborough as an NHS associate for two years moving onto an NHS/ private associate role in a six surgery practice in St Neots, Cambridgeshire for 14 years. Previous to this, I worked in private and NHS general dental practice.
From 2010 to 2015 I was on the board of directors of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
Outside of clincal work, I am involved in a diverse mix of other roles here in Cambridge.
I'm Assistant Professor of Dental Education University of Cambridge, and Course Director on the Masters in Clinical Medicine, with responsibility for the Certificate in Clinical Research, Education and Leadership. I enjoy the aspects of a portfolio career, where I have a mix of jobroles and responsibilities. It has been a fun journey finding what mix suits best for job satisfaction.
Clinically, I am Senior Dentist with the Special Care Dental Services. I see a wide range of patients with a variety of needs. On Tuesdays, I often do the general anaesthetic clinic, and I regularly treat patients under sedation. I am IASCD accredited procedural sedation mentor, and tutor in sedation and pain management for the regional FD programme. I am a past president of the Association of Dental Anaesthetists, and previously Honorary Speciality Lecturer, in Dental Sedation and Pain Management at the Eastman Dental Institute, UCL.
This is my first year being an Educational Supervisor, but I have worked with several Foundation Dentists at our clinics over the past few years. I deliver the edcuation sessions on pain management, anxiety management, and orthodontics for the regional foundation dentist and foundation dental therapist schemes.
I worked on the new Guidelines on General Anaesthetic in dentistry (2022) and was a Committee Member for the Public Health England National Guidelines for Delivery of Better Oral Healthcare (2019).
I have been a CLAHRC NIHR Fellow, and a Quality Improvement Fellow with HEEoE / The King’s Fund.
I was lead writer and expert reviewer for the new national NHS eLearning module for Dental Therapists and Hygienists on Section 17 medical prescribing exemptions.
I received the Pierre Fauchard Academy Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Dentistry, and national poster prizes for my work in sedation and quality improvement. In 2019 I was honoured with the Ely Heroes Award as Most Amazing Professional, following nomination by patients.
GDC Number: 82032
My clinical interests have always included the treatment of nervous patients so I took on a Senior Dentist role with the Special Care Dental Service at Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust (CCS) in 2009 alongside my NHS associate role. I then became Clinical Lead for IV Sedation for the service in 2014 which I continue to do.
After a change in personal circumstances due to bereavement & the Covid pandemic I exclusively worked for the Special Care Dental Service since 2020 where I provide treatment under inhalation sedation, intraveneous sedation & general anaesthesia on a referral basis. I also lead the Dental Therapist team who work for the trust where we are currently working towards enhanced training in Paediatric Dentistry & Inhalation Sedation. I am also part of the CCS Leadership Team actively participating in clinical governance & quality improvement.
After being qualified for 17 years I decided to gain postgraduate qualifications in Special Care Dentistry (SCD) at UCL Eastman where I gained a distinction & subsequently a Diploma in SCD with the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Future plans include working towards an MSc in Dental Education at the University of Cambridge starting next year.
Although this will be my first formal role as an ES everywhere I have worked have had FDs & I have been actively involved in training/ mentoring all of them.
Even though I am a highly expereienced clinican I am friendly & approachable & feel I have a lot to learn from the new generation of FDs!

Dental Healthcare Cambridge is one of eight dental clinic locations (the others being Ely, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Wisbech, Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich) in the dental division of Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust.
The Cambridge clinic is located on the Brookfields site on Mill Road & is on one level. This is a modern six surgery practice with three waiting rooms & ample free easily available parking. All surgeries are large & bright with windows & air conditioning. There are three larger surgeries which have wheelchair tipper/ bariatric chair facilities as well as a recovery room for IV Sedation patients. All equipment is modern & well maintained. We have invested in electric handpieces, digital radiography (both intraoral & OPG), rotary endodontic machines & surgical handpieces but always look at incorporating newer innovations. All surgeries have computer facilities & we use the Dentally computer system.
We have a range of services within the clinic staffed by a highly experienced, friendly & collaborative team. There is no hierachy here!
We have a Service Manager & Lead Dental Nurse who oversee the running of the Cambridge clinic.
In terms of clinical services we have:
1. Emergency dental clinic (Dental Access Centre- DAC) which anyone can attend from Monday-Friday which is triaged by a highly skilled administrative team.
2. Minor Oral Surgery Clinic (MOS) with an experienced team of specialists. Treatment is on a referral basis from local GDPs.
3. IV Sedation Service
4. Special Care Dentistry-we accept referrals from local GDPs/ non-dentists for patients (adults & children) with physical
The practice is based in the centre Cambridge.
Probably most famous for the University of Cambridge, this is a very lively small city.
I chose to live and work here as it is a very cusious mix of old and new, with a long history alongside cutting edge technology and research.
There are two train stations (soon to be three). London is about 45min by train. Stansted airport is about 30min by train.
Having a car in Cambridge is not essential. I gave up owning a car several years ago, and now travel by bike or bus / train. Cambridge is the cycling capital of the UK, with around 55% of residents making a journey by bike at least once per week.
There is a wide demographic mix here, and you will get to work with a huge range of staff and patients.
Cambridge has a very busy social, entertainment and cultural scene, with cinemas / theatres / concert halls / festivals. There are may sports clubs, gyms, an outdoor public swimming pool, a real tennis court, a football stadium, and the Fenner's cricket ground. Newmarket, the home of horse racing is about half an hour away.
The practice here at Brookfields is an interesting mix.
As an Foundation Dentist, or Foundation Dental Therapist, you will encounter a wide range of patinets, and a wide range of dental staff.
Under the same roof, we have the Special Care Dental Service, the Dental Access Cente, the Minor Oral Surgery unit, and the referral IV sedation clinic.
This means that we have a much wider range of dentists, specialities, and nurses than in general practice.
Most of our clinicians also work / have worked in general practice, on the NHS and privately.
So no matter what you encounter clinically, you will always have someone with the appropriate experience to guide you through.
Spening a year with us is a really good way to have those first steps towards a career in one of the dental specialities, or to gain the experience which will be essential to working in practice.

Two years later in 1984 I was lucky enough to get a Senior House Officer/Registrar position in Peterborough and then Bristol, for a couple of years, before returning to general dental practice.
I worked as an associate developing my skills and attending postgraduate courses whenever possible. Five years later an opportunity arose to start my own squat practice and I have been the principal here since 1992.
I have committed to professional advancement by undertaking regular post-graduate training courses such as the Tipton year-long restorative course and many other courses conducted by reputable providers.
I became an ES in 2008 and have successfully nurtured 17 FD's consecutively since then.
During this time, many ES development courses have been presented, allowing me to continually strive to improve my own performance and in 2012 I successfully completed the PG Certificate in Medical and Dental Education.
Each new FD brings with them their own experiences and learning opportunities, providing an environment for sharing knowledge and a platform for continual learning.

Melbourn Dental Practice has grown from a single surgery in 1982, to two and then three surgeries in 2010 and with the current FD planning to stay on to work full time as an associate in September, a fourth, modern surgery is shortly to be installed.
All rooms are in close proximity and help is always readily to hand from your two joint ES's and last year's incumbent providing mentorship.
A good staffing structure gives you close chairside assistance from dental care professionals who are experienced and steeped in the culture of Foundation Dentistry.
All surgeries are well equipped with computers and digital X-rays, with the recent introduction of intra oral scanners.
There is a good and steady supply of new patients to the practice with a wide variety of presenting features and all ages.
Sister practices locally have specialist oral surgery experiences to enhance your learning in this area too.
Melbourn Dental Practice sits in the centre of a busy, popular, commuter village, adjacent to a primary school, with a secondary school and science park close by.
There is ample free parking on streets close to the practice.
It is a mostly relatively affluent community with few exempt adult patients.
We have been encouraging new child patients for many years now and they bring with them members of their wider family and are hence good practice builders.
The practice has a good reputation, is the only dental practice in Melbourn and has been in operation since 1982.
There are good transport links by road and rail and the Cambridge and Peterborough Scheme operates from Cambridge, less than ten miles away.
The iconic city of Cambridge has every attraction and facility imaginable and there are many leisure pursuits on offer more locally.
The A1 and M11 motorways are not too distant and London is less than an hour away by train.
Dentistry is a continually evolving field and dental practices will need to evolve in response to these changes and these are exciting times.
We engage with local nursery groups and have gone into local schools to deliver dental education for both Key stage 1and 2 year groups.
Seventeen previous FD's have successfully enjoyed the varied experiences of living and working here on the Cambridgeshire Hertfordshire border.
We have close ties with a local Letting Agency should help with accommodation be required and a daily commute to the practice by road or rail is widely accessible within a 30 minute time frame.
Our 'sister' practices offer specialist oral surgical facilities including the placement of dental implants.
This provides a comprehensive exposure for aspiring Foundation Dentists.
