Out of Hours

It is an expectation to cover at least 2 OOH sessions a month with a minimum of 6 hours a month or 72 hours in a year, and 108 hours at the end of the scheme, with pro rata increase if extra time is spent in general practice. A named clinical supervisor will be assigned for each of these sessions. At the beginning of training, you can expect to observe the supervisor working but you will be expected to make a gradual transition towards running the shift yourself by the end of your training.

There is a compulsory induction session run by Care UK the local OOH provider, for trainees, at the start of the GP attachment, and you cannot work until this has been completed. For information on this please contact Allison Glading Allison.Glading@careuk.com

There are several OOH bases in Suffolk

  • Ipswich
  • Saxmundham
  • Stowmarket
  • West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds
  • Newmarket Community Hospital
  • Sudbury

You may also do some shifts (20%) for GP Plus which provides an extended hour’s primary care service for practices in our area.

The remuneration for working OOH is included in your salary – at a level set when you would have been expected to do considerably more hours. In order to qualify as a GP, you will need to demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent at OOH work and have completed at least 108 hours, so that he/she can sign off that part of the e-portfolio. If you don’t do the work, you run the risk of not getting your CCT!!

Care UK will inform you of the procedure for booking OOH sessions at the induction session.

If you find yourself unexpectedly ill or otherwise unable to do the shift, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to inform the shift manager at Care UK and the clinical supervisor.
