Norwich Training Scheme

Established in the Autumn of 2005, the Norwich Radiology Academy at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is one of only three state-of-the-art facilities in England specially created for training consultant radiologists. The Academy is located at the Cotman Centre approximately 10 minutes walk from Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital and the University of East Anglia.

At the Academy the Radiology STs benefit from a dedicated training environment which includes a large PACS reporting room, teleconferencing facilities, a skills laboratory with ultrasound machines and a variety of simulators, and three seminar rooms designed for teaching and training in Radiology. Clinical work takes place both at the Academy and during regular clinical placements at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital and local DGHs within the East of England.

The Norwich Academy has been highly successful and has produced consultant Radiologists who are working in the Eastern Region, the Midlands, Scotland, Western Counties and as far away as Canada and Australia. In 2013, one of our trainees was awarded the Rohan Williams Gold medal for achieving the highest mark in the Royal College of Radiologists’ Final Examination. In 2014 another of our trainees was awarded the Frank Doyle medal for the 2A exam.

As an innovative project, the Academies have been closely monitored by the Royal College of Radiologists and the Department of Health, and have demonstrated that they deliver effective and high-quality training. In the Royal College of Radiologists’ document “Radiology Training 2016 – 2026: a vision and a solution” the RCR recommends that we should “Establish Academies in all parts of the UK to raise the game significantly in Radiology Training”.
