Workforce, training and education
East of England

Norwich is the county town of Norfolk. It is considered one of the most well preserved medieval cities in Britain with a beautiful town centre and numerous attractions such as the Norwich Cathedral and Norwich Castle and within easy reach of the beautiful Norfolk coast. It also has a lively nightlife and large retail areas and is home to the University of East Anglia and to the Norwich University of the Arts.
Transport wise, Norwich is connected to Cambridge via the A11 which has recently been modernised and expanded to a dual carriageway. Norwich railway station, east of the city centre, has half-hourly services to London Liverpool Street. It is also linked to the Midlands and North West England, with hourly services to Liverpool Lime Street via Peterborough, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly. Additional hourly regional services run to Cambridge.

 The Trust:

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is a large teaching trust with over 1200 beds in the outskirts of Norwich. It is a modern structure being the first new teaching hospital to be built in England in the last 30 years as a joint venture with the University of East Anglia.

Urology at the NNUH:

Norfolk and Norwich is a busy teaching hospital urology department with a strong tradition of training and development for trainees at all levels. The department has 15 consultants urologists and a broad range of expertise in all areas- robotic prostate, renal , bladder and penile cancer workload is among the top 10 units for volume in the UK.

The presence of physician associates in theatre allows for robotic console training for interested trainees, with recent delivery of two new Davinci X robots and a dual console system.. Both trans and retroperitoneal robotic approaches are routinely used for partial nephrectomy and intracorporeal urinary diversion for cystectomy.
Stone treatment has long been an area of excellence - on site ESWL, urologist-delivered PCNL access with ultrasound/II and huge volumes of ureteroscopic cases afford excellent training opportunities.
Functional and reconstructive urology training is high-volume with a recently-bolstered 3 consultant team. Two andrology consultants deliver the only penile cancer service in the Eastern deanery, leading the way in minimally invasive inguinal lymph node dissections nationally, as well as providing the full range of benign andrology surgery.

There is a high volume BPH service with training opportunities in HoLEP and new MISTs such as Urolift and Rezum. We have run a one-stop clinic for all new referrals since 2011, which all consultants and trainees contribute to.

There are MDTs in oncology, stones, functional urology, and pelvic floor work which provide excellent training opportunities. Prostate cancer diagnostics training in LATP biopsy and fusion technology is available. Emergency workload is broad and varied, supported by a consultant who is free of other clinical commitments, on a rota of 1:11 for middle grades.

The department is research-active with 2 NIHR-funded academic clinical fellows and a number of previous successful MD and PhDs, and many opportunities to get involved in research and audit. We have been innovative in the development of physician associate and specialist nurse roles to support the department and reduce the service load for non-trading middle grades. We have always prioritised the training needs of local higher trainees in their time with us.

In short, whatever your area of interest, the clinical experience is available here in a busy but welcoming unit which can deliver the confidence required to be ready for consultant practice.
