RCOG National Trainer and Trainee of the Year Awards

Each year the RCOG presents an award for the national trainer of the year, and 4 awards for national trainee of year. These awards are presented annually at the National Trainee's Conference and whilst having no monetary value, serve as an important recognition of contribution to training in O&G and look great on the CV.

National Trainee of the Year

There are 4 awards presented annually:

• ST1-2 Award (for excellence in the previous complete year of training)

• ST3-5 Award (for excellence in the previous complete year of training)

• ST6-7 Award (for excellence in the previous complete year of training)

• Gold/ CCT Award (for excellence throughout the entire course of training)

One trainee for each category is nominated by the head of school of each deanery by the 1st of October each year. If nominated you will be asked to provide a brief personal statement to provide more information for the national panel to consider.

National Trainer of the Year

There is one award presented annually for the RCOG national trainer of the year. This is designed to recognise a contribution to training above and beyond any formal role held (e.g. college tutor) and is open to any member of the multidisciplinary team such as consultants, other trainees, midwives, nurses, sonographers etc.

Each postgraduate deanery puts forward 1 candidate for the national panel to consider. In the Health Education East of England deanery, all obstetric and gynaecology trainees are invited to submit initial nominations using the form below and forwarding them to the chair of trainees committee. Each candidate must be nominated by 2 trainees to be eligible for consideration. Once nominations close, anonymised versions of the forms are considered by the whole trainees committee and a vote held to determine our final nominee.

Nominations will open in mid-June and usually close 4 weeks later in mid-July. The nominee for Health Education East of England will be announced via email and website by July 31s

The 2016 Health Education East of England nominee for the RCOG National Trainer of the Year Award is:

Ms Sarah Smith, EPU lead nurse at Colchester General Hospital

'Even when they have a busy scanning list they are always happy to have a trainee in with them. They allow trainees to develop scanning skills and is really encouraging when they are finding things difficult.'

'They are always happy to discuss a patient after a trainee has scanned them and will always happily give a second opinion when the trainee is not sure allowing that trainee to scan with the confidence that if they are not sure then they can easily get a second opinion and therefore scan within their competency'

Previous nominees:

2015: Mr Sanjaya Kalkur, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and college tutor at Southend Hospital
