Physician Associate Foundation Intern Programme – Secondary Care/Mental Health
HEE Training Offer

This is a Health Education England initiative to support newly qualified physician associates (PA) and physician associates who have been qualified for less than a year to start/develop their careers working in a supported and structured environment. The aims include:

  • recognising that newly/recently qualified PA need time and support to develop within the multidisciplinary clinical team

  • providing employers with financial assistance to support newly/recently qualified PA.

  • maximising the benefit of the PA role within the Trust.

The Trust will offer a one year program of either 3 x 4 month rotations or 2 x 6 month rotations around specialities which either already have PA in post, or programmes where the team would like to develop a PA program and can support this initiative.

 

Purpose
  • PA can become essential and skilled members of the clinical team, however newly/recently qualified PA need time to develop their skills, experience, knowledge and confidence with support and supervision in the workplace.

  • Employers who are not familiar with PA need clear guidance to help them to form realistic expectations of the role to enable them to support a new/recently qualified PA.

  • To support trusts to develop the role of the PA for a twelve-month period. (Many PA would benefit from a second year of support and supervision, similar to the two foundation years for junior doctors, and trusts might want to consider continuing the support structure provided in year one for a second year. This cannot, unfortunately, be funded by HEE).

Who is this for?
  • Acute and Mental Health Trusts in the east of England

  • Newly qualified PA or PA with up to one year’s experience

What is the training offer?

For the PA:

  • A structured programme for 12 months.

  • Release to attend education sessions within the Trust

  • Funding for study leave.

  • A named clinical supervisor, educational supervisor and mentor.

For the employer:

  • up to £5,000 payment for one year to recognise the support and time required to develop the newly qualified PA.

Why offer a rotational placement?

Rotational programs are widely used to enable healthcare staff to gain experience and exposure across a variety of specialities and to make informed career decisions. Rotational programmes are well established in junior doctor Foundation Training.

What support does the PA require?

This offer is designed to recognise that employers need to provide significant support to newly and recently qualified PA.

  • Significant support and supervision to consolidate the PA knowledge and skills. 

  • Access to the local F1 teaching program

  • £500 of personal study leave money (study leave process to be manged as for Foundation Doctors)

  • A named clinical supervisor with 0.25 PA within their job plan (or sufficient SPA time) to support the PA.

  • A named educational supervisor with 0.25 PA within their job plan to support the PA educationally.
