Understanding Medical Indemnity

Doctors work hard to maintain standards and keep patients safe. However things can inevitably go wrong. In these circumstances it is important that patients are not disadvantaged by a doctor not having adequate insurance to cover their practice. Your employer may also provide some level of indemnity cover but this may not be adequate to cover your whole scope of practice. Insurance and indemnity may also provide you with access to personal regulatory and medico-legal support and advice if you ever need it.

The GMC provide further details on what type of cover you will need.

The BMA also provide a comprehensive guide to indemnity cover.
