JOB DESCRIPTION

LEP School of Medicine Quality Improvement Lead (QI Lead)

Accountable to: (Professionally) Health Education East of England) and the Royal College of  Physicians (RCP)

                            (Managerially) Trust Board of his/her Local Education Provider (LEP)

Reports to: Head of School of Postgraduate Medicine and RCP College Tutor of his/her LEP

Job Purpose: The QI Lead will, on behalf of HEEoE, the RCP and his/her LEP, oversee the involvement of trainees in quality improvement in his/her Trust

Appointments Process:   The post will be advertised internally within the LEP and interested consultants and other clinicians on the specialist register will be asked to submit expressions of interest. Applicants who fulfil the attached person specification will be formally interviewed by a panel including the LEP RCP College Tutor, and one or more of the LEP Clinical Tutor or Director of Medical Education (DME), the LEP Clinical Director (or representative), the HEEoE  Senior Quality Improvement Manager (or representative) and a representative from the LEP’s personnel department

Details of the successful candidate should be provided to the Regional Clinical Leader in Quality Improvement, the Head of School of Postgraduate Medicine and the HEEoE Quality Team

Tenure: Three years, but may be extended by a further two years

Key Responsibilities

1. Education and Training Roles

The QI Lead will:

  1. develop and maintain a detailed personal knowledge of Quality Improvement methodology, including the principles outlined in the RCP’s Learning to Make a Difference programme
  2. be a member of the LEP’s medical Faculty Group; he/she should attend meetings of this group whenever possible.
  3. liaise with his/her LEP’s RCP College Tutor and Associate College Tutor, Educational Supervisors and trainees to devise a high quality local training in QI methodology for both trainers and trainees
  4. promote medical trainee participation in quality improvement projects, including by highlighting the advantages in terms of acquisition of new skills and real benefits to patients that can be achieved within relatively short timescales.
  5. identify and provide support to a faculty of trainers with an expertise in QI methodology to act as supervisors of QI projects
  6. ensure relevant induction programmes include information on how to engage in QI projects
  7. encourage trainees to regularly visit the QI section of the HEEoE website and the RCP’s Learning to Make a Difference website
  8. encourage and facilitate trainees’ attendance at regional and national QI Events
  9. assist, when requested, with the delivery of regional and national QI events

2. Trainee and Trainer Support

The QI Lead will:

  1. maintain a list of proposed QI projects for trainees which aligns with the LEP’s priorities for QI and allocate these to trainees when requested
  2. encourage trainees to independently identify potential QI projects and to hel them to develop these if they appear feasible and in line with the LEP’s priorities
  3. ensure that all medical trainees whose curricula require participation in a QI project are doing so
  4. identify and provide specific advice and support to trainees who are failing to progress satisfactorily with their QI projects.
  5. provide support to supervisors of QI projects when needed, including those supervising trainees who are failing to progress satisfactorily with their QI projects
  6. provide support to trainees who wish to make presentations at regional and/or national QI event

3. Support for the RCP and the Postgraduate School of Medicine

The QI Lead will:

  1. publicise and encourage trainees to attend local, regional and national QI events organised by or on behalf of HEEoE and/or the RCP
  2. disseminate other information from HEEoE and the RCP to trainees, e.g. about publications, educational events and other developments at the College or School relevant to QI
