Communication Skills Workshops 

All communication skills workshops are aimed primarily at International Medical Graduates (IMG). However, please email psw.eoe@hee.nhs.uk if you feel you would benefit from one of the PSW communication skills workshops.

Please note that the workshops that the Professional Support and Well-being Service hold for IMGs have a strict criteria of eligibility. We are currently only able to allocate spaces to IMGs that are:

  • Health Education England, East of England trainee doctors and;
  • Medical Training Initiative (MTI) doctors

Communication Skills Workshop : Interpersonal Skills

The day will be focussing on body language, non-verbal cues, tone of voice, open questions. The workshop will be fun and interactive with games and lots of opportunity to practice the skills learnt throughout the day. There are 15 spaces available and would expect commitment to attend once a place has been confirmed.

Who can attend?

Health Education England East of England doctor or dentist in training or Medical Training Initiative Doctor that are International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

HEE EoE GP Trainees ST3 IMGs (ST1 and ST2 will be able to access other workshops put on by the GP School)

The workshop will cover broadly the following areas:

  • Non-verbal Communication, otherwise known as Body Language
  • Verbal Communication, otherwise known as Speech
  • Active Listening
  • Questions. The benefits of Open and Closed questioning
  • Empathy
Clinical Communication Skills with Mandy Williams

The day builds on interpersonal skills and provides feedback in how to put communication skills into practice. Course objectives will cover impact of structure, effective history taking, explanation planning and shared decision making. There are 15 spaces available.

Who can attend?

Health Education England East of England doctor or dentist in training or Medical Training Initiative Doctor that are International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

HEE EoE GP Trainees ST3 IMGs (ST1 and ST2 will be able to access other workshops put on by the GP School)

The workshop will cover the following areas:

  • Challenges in effective consultations
  • Patient centred interviews: identifying effective skills and structure
  • Putting skills into practice through role-play
  • Adapting to different challenges
Empathy and Dealing with Conflict

Who can attend?

  • Health Education England, East of England trainee doctors and;
  • Medical Training Initiative (MTI) doctors

The course will address will cover 2 topic areas in a full day session.

  Empathy: 09:00 - 12:00 Dealing with conflict : 13:00 - 16:00
The course will address
  • The qualities of empathy
  • The importance of active listening
  • How to build rapport with your patient from the beginning of the consultation
  • Physical ways to show empathy
  • How to use empathy when breaking bad news
  • Skills on how to deal with conflict
  • Recognising our own emotional state and how to manage it
  • How to develop empathy and understanding for other people positions
  • Active listening
  • Compromise

 

Each topic will be discussed, with advice and techniques on how to deal and resolve conflict whilst maintaining positivity and confidence. 

Role play with an actor will allow the delegates to practice what they have learnt and hear constructive feedback to help with their progression.

Open / Coaching Questions, and Empathy

Who can attend?

  • Health Education England, East of England trainee doctors and;
  • Medical Training Initiative (MTI) doctors

The course will address will cover 2 topic areas in a full day session.

  Open and Coaching Questions: 09:00 - 12:00 Empathy: 13:00 - 16:00
The course will address
  • Asking the right question to allow the patient to think about their own health and development.
  • How to reframe common questions.  Allowing the patient to think about their own lifestyle and what changes they can make and not feeling like the doctor is telling them what to do. 
  • How to build on a conversation in the consultation rather than interviewing the patient.
  • Active listening
  • A patient focused agenda.
  • The qualities of empathy
  • The importance of active listening
  • How to build rapport with your patient from the beginning of the consultation
  • Physical ways to show empathy
  • How to use empathy when breaking bad news

Charlotte Grundy

Charlotte Grundy, founder of Point Taken Consultancy, is a confidence coach and mentor with a firm belief in helping individuals achieve successful and fulfilling lives both professionally and personally. Over the last 8 years, Charlotte has worked with clients who struggle with vocal confidence and general communication concerns.

Charlotte’s aim is to give you bespoke training and techniques to achieve your personal goals of communicating clearly, effectively with confidence and personality. Charlotte is a professionally trained actress, graduating from the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama in 2007.

Mandy Williams

Mandy Williams is an experienced nurse, coach, and trainer with over 35 years of experience of working in the health service. Mandy’s area of expertise is clinical communication skills, working with individuals and groups to recognise and develop skills for effective patient centred interviews and professional interactions.

Mandy works with undergraduate medical students at Cambridge University Hospital Trust (CUH), is a facilitator on the National Advanced Communication Skills Course for senior clinicians and provides individual coaching and workshops for Health Education England. Mandy specialises in providing remediation for clinicians in difficulty.

Safe Reflective Practice

Who should attend?

East of England doctors and dentists in training, and Medical Trainee Initiative (MTI) doctors.

HEE EoE doctors and dentists in training that are International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are particularly encouraged to attend.


What will the workshop cover?

In this interactive session the workshop will be split into two parts:

  • an interactive talk and introduction to key themes of reflective practice  
  • followed by a small group workshop where will be putting theory into practice, encouraging the participants to write a learning log together using the techniques discussed during the talk

Facilitator

Dr Tanya Leger is a post CCT GP in an ST4 Fellowship in HEE EoE. Trained in Cambridge, has produced some excellent work on safe reflective practice, which is relevant to all doctors in training, particularly IMGs.
