There are currently five training posts available for specialty training in the east of England. None of these posts are recognised formally for intensive care training under the strict regulations of the Collegiate Board. However, these positions provide valuable expertise for paediatricians wishing to enhance their skills.
We have previously placed paediatricians who have expressed an interest in PICU on the Unit for 12 months. Trainees have been released for Out of Programme Experience in other intensive care units to enhance their training where appropriate. We have developed regional intensive care training modules with placements on PICU for 12 months and Level 3 NICUs for a further 12 months.
These training placements will allow trainees to become confident in airway management in the older child and central venous line placement. There will opportunities to undertake research and audit during these placements.
