Workforce, training and education
East of England

Whilst there is no formal specialist paediatric cardiology/cardiothoracic centre in the east of England, there is ample opportunity to gain expertise in paediatric cardiology.  Across the east of England, there are a number of consultant paediatricians with expertise in paediatric cardiology who run excellent local cardiology services supported by out-reach clinicians from the Brompton, Guy's and Great Ormond Street Hospitals.

There is ample opportunity to learn basic echocardiography skills. The Deanery has an excellent track record of placing trainees in 12 month cardiology placements in specialist cardiac centres to meet the training requirements to specialise as a paediatrician with expertise in paediatric cardiology.  Training placements have been obtained in Great Ormond Street, the Brompton, Guy's, Leicester and Liverpool.

Trainees will have the opportunity to undertake some research projects and conduct high quality audits. Clinicians in the east of England have established a special interest group which meets twice a year.

The Neonatal Echo Skills website is a useful resource for trainees who are learning neonatal echocardiography. Sincere thanks to Dr. Alan Groves, MRC Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant Neonatologist at Imperial College for permitting its use for the purpose of education.
