The Trainer Development Programme was originally developed and run by the Eastern Deanery and transferred to the University of Bedfordshire in 2007. This transfer has allowed us to build upon a highly regarded and successful programme designed to enhance the quality of medical education and training in the region.
The programme is geared towards providing suitable training for all doctors with the skills they require to fulfill their roles. Therefore it is of particular relevance to NHS Consultants and those in more senior training grades, but applications from more junior medical staff are also welcome, in particular for the "Teaching the Teachers to Teach" workshop.
Places are very limited on these courses and will be offered on a first come, first served basis – please make sure you select the correct course for your needs as there are two different courses. For the coming year the cost of each workshop will be £475 (including one night's accommodation if required, all food and tuition). This represents excellent value for money. If you wish to book a space, please e-mail: TrainDevProg@gmail.com with your full name, grade, speciality, NHS Trust and preferred date.
TEACHING THE TEACHERS TO TEACH
MADINGLEY HALL, CAMBRIDGE
Thursday 12th and Friday 13th May 2016
This two-day residential course for hospital Consultants, Specialist Registrars, SAS doctors and more junior medical staff aims to build confidence and skills in formal teaching, learning and giving effective feedback.
Central to this course are the two short teaching episodes (micro- teaching episodes) of seven and ten minutes each, delivered by each delegate. These enable delegates to demonstrate their own teaching methods and style as well as practice the giving and receiving of feedback in a secure environment. The second micro-teaching session gives the delegate the opportunity to apply newly learnt skills, which often requires amendment to their original teaching episode.
In the plenary and small group sessions, delegates are introduced to a range of skills central to effective teaching. There is also the opportunity to discuss and reflect on individual experiences and new information and practical educational techniques experienced on the course, along with the opportunity to help develop an understanding of some of the educational theory underpinning the course.
Course feedback has been excellent since its inception and has been used to change the course content and presentation with good effect.
TRAINING THE TRAINERS
MADINGLEY HALL, CAMBRIDGE
Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd April 2016
Thursday 9th and Friday 10th June 2016
This two-day residential course for hospital Consultants, Specialist Registrars and SAS doctors of all specialities is designed to develop confidence and one-to-one training skills in the clinical environment. It is particularly aimed at clinical supervisors, educational supervisors and those junior staff with training responsibilities. The course builds upon the fact that any clinical event, whether it is surgical, medical or managerial, can be recognised used and structured to become a training event, whatever the time pressure. This recognises that time is at a premium in the NHS and a sensible balance between work and training is essential to enable training to take place whilst maintaining work throughput.
The need to assess trainees' background and experience is emphasised and the essential requirement to set sensible learning goals early on within a secure environment. Using small groups and short role plays by faculty, these essentials are demonstrated and emphasised; building both understanding and confidence in using newly introduced training techniques.
The course also provides a first-step introduction to the Assessment and Appraisal Course, with the opportunity to practise basic appraisals and also understand some of the terminology used in Assessment.
It is to be emphasised that training in the context of this course, is not only skill based but includes how to handle difficulties at work, patient complaints and ethical dilemmas.
Central to the delivery of the programme is the mix of short lecture presentation, facilitated exercises in the form of prepared role plays and reflective plenary discussions.
