The Educational Supervisor: Catriona: I qualified from King's in 1987 and worked both around London and Nottingham as an associate until I bought this practice in 2001.
Initially I worked single handed but as the practice grew we became a training practice in 2004. I have continued as an ES every year since - that is 19 newly qualified dentists who have successfully completed foundation training with me. So experience is something I can guarantee. As well as working in practice I also work for NHSE/I where I am Associate Medical Director( Dental) for the Midlands Region-this gives me a very useful insight into practice quality, safety and the national performer list.
Outside work I am married with three children tall have followed different paths through University and none are dentists this means I am very aware of the trials and tribulations of being a young person in society today. Any other spare time I have is taken up my young event horse
Lewis qualified in 2016 from Aberdeen prior to that he had completed a degree in Biomedical Sciences from Southampton University. Lewis completed his FD year with us and then stayed on part time/combining his work for two years at another local training practice. In January 2020 he made the very popular move of returning to us full-time. He lives locally with his fiancee and enjoys playing football and running for relaxation.
The Practice: We are a very busy well established, mixed NHS/Private practice with over 13000 patients on our books. We offer a full range of NHS and Private treatments to our patients. You will be provided with a complete list of patients ranging from some that have attended the practice for years and are now in a maintenance phase of treatment to new patients who present with complex needs. This provides you with an excellent opportunity to perfect and embed all the skills you learn at dental school.
The practice has been on the same site for many years and was extended/refurbished in 2012 .It has four surgeries spread over two floors with good disabled access to the ground floor. The size and layout of the practice mean that social distancing is easily achieved and post Covid requirements have been put in place.
The practice is computerised moving towards paperless and also has digital x-rays in all surgeries. We are privileged to be supported by a good team of qualified dental nurses.
There is a an ongoing programme of refurbishment with a new decontamination room installed in 2018, a staff room where you can mix with your colleagues at lunch time and an office where tutorials and study sessions can be conducted away from the surgery. There is ample on site parking both for patients and staff.
The Area: Newark is a lively Market town with lots of history including a Castle and a Civil War museum. There are many bars and restaurants in the town, a cinema, theatre and a selection of independent shops. It also boasts 2 train lines-one running from Lincoln to Nottingham, the other the East Coast Mainline which means London,Leeds and beyond are not far away.
The A1 and A46 are also very close which means study days are easily accessible which mean Nottingham and Leicester are easily commutable and popular bases in the past for our FD's who enjoy City living.
Other Points of Interest: We are now in the enviable position of being an experienced training practice but with young blood to enhance our aim to provide our trainees with a well rounded start to their dental career in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Both ES have been redeployed during Covid-19- Lewis to an local UDC and a fit tester. Catriona within NHSE/I to support the setting up of the local UDC system and latterly as a vaccinator.
