Surgical Curriculum: Delivery of the entire curriculum to all subspecialties in General Surgery including Breast, Colorectal, Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic surgery, Oesophagogastric, Benign Upper GI, Bariatric, Endocrine and Transplant surgery (Liver, pancreas, kidney, small bowel, multivisceral). This comprehensive range of surgical specialties spread across the 17 hospitals in the region.

Training: Excellent training opportunities in tertiary centres including Cambridge University Hospitals, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Broomfield Hospital. The deanery encompasses an outstanding large District General Hospitals connected with a close network to major trauma centres and cancer tertiary centres within the East of England. The deanery provides a full time and less than full-time training at the discretion of the Training programme Director. Trainees taking time out of training for research, maternity/paternity leave or for other reasons can be phased back to work with deanery funded support.

Surgical Rotation: Rotation is trainee friendly based on trainee choices and we have highly engaged and approachable deanery staff. Trainees granted their first or second choice preferences in regards to training rotations. The Training Programme Director takes into account location preferences, academic interests and level of training when allocating hospital rotations. Junior trainees tend to remain in the same hospital for the first two years (ST3-4) to facilitate more consistent and good quality generic elective and emergency training at the early stages of their training.

Simulation courses: We have track record and availability of simulation training for core and higher surgical trainees provided by Evelyn Cambridge simulation centre, the ICENI centre in Colchester and robotic training at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. These courses are free of charge for regional trainees and are delivered by expert faculty. Trainees in the East of England have access to an extensive surgical cadaveric simulation programme covers all General Surgery subspecialties which provides training that is as close to real life as possible. The courses are mapped to the surgical curriculum in General Surgery and the use of cadaveric specimens provides risk-free practice under close expert supervision with constructive feedback.

Teaching and online learning: Regional teaching programme, biweekly in a virtual format or in person. The teaching programme is covering the whole spectrum of General Surgery specialties and it is delivered in line with the new ISCP curriculum for General surgery. Effective online learning platforms – Panopto and Bridge. These two blended platforms provide continuing regional teaching for trainees. It allows every specialty to access each other’s resources and lectures so there can be cross pollination of education across specialties. Moreover, the teaching sessions are recorded and can be accessed from Panopto and Bridge at any time

Research: Internationally renowned research academic training, with ability to access research in OOPE or OOPT period. Availability of the academic clinical lecturer and academic clinical fellow programmes and most trainees will obtain their CCT during their academic clinical rotation. Posts are available at University of East Anglia and University of Cambridge. Opportunities for Higher Degrees in research are available within the region with many trainees pursuing formal research affiliated with Cambridge University and the University of East Anglia
