The Educational Supervisor: I graduated from Leeds University in 2012 and did my FD training at Desford Dental Care. I stayed on as an associate dentist and as I enjoyed helping the subsequent FDs over the years, in 2019 I became an ES myself. I gained my MFDS & later a Masters degree in Dental Law & Ethics at the University of Bedfordshire. I have expanded my skillset by attending lots of post graduate training, including the world renowned Chris Orr’s year long restorative programme and his subsequent advanced occlusion training. I love the diversity of general practice & particularly enjoy restorative dentistry. I also enjoy providing short term orthodontics (Invisalign) & facial aesthetics.
I really believe the foundation year is one of the most important years in a dentists career & I look forward to meeting the next FD to support them along their exciting journey. My aim is to produce a competent and caring dentist who is capable of handling any situation, with confidence.
The Practice: Desford Dental Care has a local reputation for a calm and caring approach towards nervous patients and regularly receives 5 star reviews on Google, NHS Choices and our own social media pages. We have been a training practice since 2005 so the nursing and reception team allow for a supportive and friendly environment for a dentist starting off in their career. The practice building itself is modern and boasts 5 fully-equipped air-conditioned, ground floor surgeries, a decon suite, a light and airy reception area, offices and staffroom/kitchen facilities. We have a car park with 8 spaces, one of which is for disabled parking. There are separate parking facilities for staff. We are environmentally aware and a large proportion of our electricity comes from solar panels. The FD will be able to make use of equipment at the practice such as a digital scanner, a digital SLR, rotary endodontics as well as electrosurge and air abrasion units. There are 4 dentists, 2 FD dentists and 2 hygiene and therapists. As well as this the practice has good relationships with local labs and specialists which the FD can utilise to further their learning
The Area: Desford is a very attractive rural setting on the outskirts of Leicestershire, and the practice itself is in a conservation area. It has a lovely family village feel and has lots of local events such as Desford in Bloom & the annual Scarecrow festival.
It is approximately 8 miles in opposite directions from Leicester and Hinckley respectively. Desford is a thriving village and has all the amenities needed on a day to day basis. Local shops include a Co-Operative, pharmacy, Post Office/general stores, beauty salon, barbers and a tea shop. Junction 21 of the M1 is approximately 15 minutes drive, as is Fosse Park (a large out of town shopping centre) & Meridian Leisure Park. A regular bus route between Leicester and Market Bosworth runs through Desford. Mainline train services include Leicester, Hinckley and Narborough.
Other Points of Interest: The practice is sociable and forward thinking, with a diverse patient base of generally friends people. The staff enjoy having FDs in the practice and are involved with the FDs development and previous FDs have taken part in nursery and school visits for oral hygiene promotion. There are 3 educational supervisors and 2 foundation dentists which makes for a great learning environment, especially because all of the dentists promote an open door policy. We have clinical meetings once a fortnight to go through cases and bounce ideas across.
