The Educational Supervisor: I qualified BDS at Guy's in December 1968 and  MSc in Dental Public Health at The London in 1971. I was for many years a clinical assistant in Oral Surgery at local hospitals. My life long interest in postgraduate education has involved year courses at the Eastman and many in Europe and US.  I am a general practitioner with an interest in restorative and cosmetic dentistry, implants and cad cam dentistry.
My teaching qualification has contributed to an increasing interest in the practice as a training environment.
We feel that we have developed an innovative dental practice that encourages everyone to develop and to realise their potential.  We are proud of our commitment to dental nurse training; we are a clinical placement for trainee hygienist therapists from the University of Essex and several members of our team are involved in teaching undergraduates..  We currently have three  FDs within the practice and this creates a very stimulating environment for the recently qualified.  We have a true skill mix.

The Practice: The Practice: We have a long-established eight-surgery practice with eight dentists, five hygienists and a therapist, caring for about 12000 patients.  The work is mixed NHS and private with opportunities to provide quality dentistry.  We embrace all aspects of modern practice; smile design, implants, invisible ortho and Cerec computer aided ceramic restorations.

The practice has recently seen a complete remodeling and now has a best practice sterilization area, improved facilities for the disabled and a very comfortable new reception and waiting area.  We will shortly be installing equipment in one of the three new surgery areas.  We now have a staff meeting room, dedicated patient consultation area and improved facilities for quiet study together and an improved staff room.

We have digital x-rays (periapical & pan oral), an intra oral camera and digital camera linked to the practice computer system (Kodak R4) and are virtually paper free.  We have a highly qualified group of dental nurses, six of whom are dental radiographers.  Together with our dentists including our current FDs we have a great team that takes its dentistry very seriously but has lots of fun.

The Area: The practice is situated in Brentwood, Essex (M25 Junction 28).  Despite what you might have heard about Essex, Brentwood is a very pleasant area and if you are lucky you will bump into one of local TOWIE celebs.  It is only 30 minutes by train to Liverpool Street and by car to Stansted.  The coast and countryside of Essex and East Anglia are within easy reach.

Our patients either work locally (major employers in the town include Ford of Europe and BT) or commute to London many of whom work in the City.

Other Points of Interest: We have developed excellent links with specialist services in oral surgery, orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics and implantology both locally and in London.  We are in our tenth year as part of the BDA Good Practice scheme. We have links with the University of Essex at Southend as a clinical placement for hygienist/therapists.  We are totally committed to life-long learning for all our team members.  All of our dentists have achieved or are working towards post-graduate qualifications.  We have two FDs within the practice and two student hygienist/therapists on clinical placement.

The environment of learning encourages our staff to develop their own careers and several of our dental nurses are in the process of upgrading their skills eg radiography, implant nursing, oral health instruction and training to become hygienist/therapists.  The other DFT Trainer within the practice and our Tutor Hygienist/Therapist have also been awarded PGCertClinEd.

The nature of the practice and its patient base gives FDs a broad range of opportunities to practise all aspects of dentistry within an ethical environment focused on comprehensive patient care.
