Learning Logs

  • - Minimum of 2-3 entries should be completed per week, 50% of which should be clinical
  • - Type
    • - There are a variety of entery types, such as clinical encounters, tutorials, significant events
    • - Try to include at least one of each type in a review period, especially a siginifcant event analysis
    • - You will also need to evidence a full audit cycle during your training - there is a learning log type to cover audit so that this can be clearly recorded
    • - e-Learning for Health has e-learning modules under the GP Curriculum Headings
      • Modules completed on e-LFH under the GP curriculum will automatically be entered into your portfolio
      • Access to these modules is free once you register
  • - Consider the style in which you write your enteries
    • - Entries should be reflective and identiy what you have learnt and how this improves your practice
    • - You do not need to write an essay giving a minute-by-minute account of events!
    • - Try to identify any ongoing learning needs, these can then be sens to you PDPeds
      • - PUNs – Patient’s Unmet Need
      • - DENs – Doctor’s Educational Need (Clinical and non-clinical knowledge, skills, attitude, experience)
  • - Entries don't have to be negative, include positive events as well, demonstrate your progress and implementation of learning
  • - Curriculum coverage is assessed - you should have a minimum of 10 enteries for each curriculum area by the end of training.

Personal Development Plans

  • - About 12 entries per year
  • - Identified areas of learning need – can be from your learning log or other sources
  • - Aim for SMART entries:
    • Specific – not too broad, e.g. “To develop my consultation structure” rather than “be a better GP”
    • Measureable – clear outcomes, such as improved COT competency outcomes, PSQs
    • Attainable – don’t aim for the impossible. E.g. “Go on a communication skills course” rather than “Master consultation skills by the end of the month”
    • Relevant – could be academic, personal or career development but consider how your objectives affect the bigger picture
    • Time-bound – set a realistic timescale, e.g. “by the end of this placement I will...”
