SAS Quality Improvement 'in action' Programme

Quality improvement has long been an important theme within healthcare professionals but doctors and senior nurses have often lacked the knowledge to make the link between everyday challenges and being able to generate change in their work area. This is often further compounded by a lack of development in the tools to facilitate such a change.

This programme, delivered by Dedici, utilises an initial workshop, handout pack of tools/resources and a combination of action learning sets and individual online/telephone coaching to enable to delegate to identify a QI project and then take it through a series of clearly defined steps to the point of delivering a business case to their trust.

By the end of the programme, delegates will be able to:

1. Identify opportunities for improvement in their own work area

2. Develop a quality improvement project, including demonstrating an understanding of how to apply a QI tools and methods successfully.

24-25 Cohort

This programme has now ended, with 14 SAS Doctors from across the east of England completing the programme.

The programme concluded with a celebration event which took place on 8 May, where we got to hear about the excellent projects that had taken place as a result of the programme. It was wonderful hearing the positive impact on participants and the incredible ideas that were being generated.

Testimonials

Dr Waheed Murad, SAS Tutor, Luton and Dunstable University Hospital

"Participating in the QI "in action" programme has been an incredibly rewarding and empowering experience. The structured approach, practical tools, and expert guidance provided throughout the programme enabled me to confidently lead and implement a new, patient-centred service within my department.

As a result, I successfully established a unique joint adult cardiology and paediatric cardiologist clinic for patients aged 16 to 17 years an initiative that is currently one of its kind within the NHS. This service has been well received, with strong support from management stake holders, colleagues and positive feedback from patients and their families.

The programme not only enhanced my leadership and project management skills, but also strengthened my ability to drive meaningful, sustainable change. I would highly recommend it to any clinician interested in improving care delivery and making a measurable impact."

Dr Nermeen Moharam, SAS Doctor, Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust

"I am grateful for the opportunity to develop my quality improvement project while applying the principles and methodologies acquired  through the programme. One of the most valuable aspects of this experience has been the regular supervision and group sessions, which provided insight into the progress and approaches of colleagues working on parallel projects. This collaborative and reflective environment has significantly enhanced my understanding and practical application of quality improvement in clinical settings."

Dr Francis Anyanwu, Specialty Doctor in Haematology, East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

"The SAS Quality Improvement 'in action' was a success for me personally. It enabled me to be more confident about putting forward a successful business case and equipping me with the right tools to implement my ideas regarding service delivery. I particularly enjoyed the face-to-face meetings and collaboration between peers. It allowed me to express myself in a more confident manner. I think the pacing between meetings was just about right as well. Kudos to the SAS team and Dedici for putting this together."

Dr Gergana Racheva, Specialty Doctor, Cambridge University Hospitals

"The program helped me to get a structure for my project, helped me to think of a project actually, as the first step. I learned that quality improvement may be a very small change with a big impact on patients or a major undertaking. The most important thing for me was to learn how to write a business case - where to find the template, what information is required, which teams to involve and how to engage the stakeholders to support me."
