Key clinical deliverables that can be achieved within this post

Clinical Deliverable 1: One to one supervised minor oral surgery list under local anaesthetic as well as a regular access to list with teaching in Oral surgery under general anaesthetic and local anaesthetic with IV sedation.

Clinical Deliverable 2: Appropriate management of medically compromised patients (within outpatient, day-case and inpatient settings) Including management of patient on anti-coagulation, Bisphosphonates and Radiotherapy etc.

Clinical Deliverable 3: Recognition and management of oral lesions in Oral surgery setting. Exposure to wide variety of Oral medicine cases as well in clinic.

Clinical Deliverable 4: Management of emergency Maxillofacial admissions (dental trauma, maxillofacial trauma and oral-facial infections)

Clinical Deliverable 5: Assessment and management of oral surgery emergency patients including trauma, laceration, dento alveolar trauma and facial fractures
Appropriate Competency: Mapped to DCT Curriculum points: C3 Oral Surgery - 38, 43, 52, 50, 48, 42, 45, 34, 5, 6, 11, 10, 12, 13, 26, 30, 40, 35, 46, 51, 39

Clinical Deliverable 6: Work well in a team including Orthodontics, Restorative dentistry and other branches of medicine and surgery

All post are based on Royal Stoke Hospital site alone, but the trust includes two sites under its remit.

Additional Information about the Post

The consultant group cover a complete remit of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery-Trauma, Dento facial Deformity, Oncology, Implantology, Salivary gland surgery and Dento alveolar surgery.

Clinic sessions are within the department and can be supervision in OMFS, attendance in orthodontics or restorative clinics where appropriate and attendance in minor oral surgery sessions with the team.

We provide access to regular oral surgery lists for the DCT's with attendance at supervised oral surgery list with our staff grades under la with or without sedation and ga.

UHNM is a busy level one trauma centre with a DCT on call 24-7 with a lot of experience of acute care while being covered by a tier of more senior staff grades and registrars and consultant.

Normal Working day is 8am to 4pm

Day on-call is 8am to 8pm

Night on-call is 8pm to 8am

Educational and Induction programme Including Trust and Library Facilities

There is an opportunity to shadow before starting a post.

Teaching Programme: Midlands programme – found on the Deanery Website

Local programme: One experienced allocated educational supervisor for the 6 DCT’s - Week teaching ward round, Weekly DCT led Journal Club, Departmental audit or educational session every 6 weeks with DCT input and Weekly “Grand rounds” teaching on teams for the trust

Other opportunities: All DCTs are encouraged and expected to partake in Audit and research

Parking: Staff Car Park permits are available from https://uhnmstaffpermit.apcoa.co.uk/ . It is Pay as you Go hospital parking. ‘Parkbee’ private car park is a 10-minute walk from the hospital entrance. Free parking on a side street can be found within a 15-minute walk. Out of hours parking can be found on Ashlands road next to the hospital, you can park on the single yellow line outside of the following hours: Mon-Fri 9am to 4pm. This is useful when working on call or on weekends/bank holidays.

Accommodation/Transport: Staff accommodation is available upon request. Most DCT’s live at home or rent within a commutable distance. Stoke-on-Trent train station is a 15–20-minute bus ride or a 30-minute walk from the hospital (roughly 1.5 miles from the hospital).
