The L&D became a University Teaching Hospital of University College Hospital London in 2011. Since then it has continued to enhance it’s international reputation as a pioneering world leader in a number of areas including; Neo-Natal Intensive Care, Obesity Research and Neurophysiology. The Trust is now also one of the best clinical performers in the country, with Emergency and Urgent Care services at the L&D officially being ranked as the top performer in the country. During 2015/16 more than 98% of patients attending our Emergency Department completed their care within 4 hours.
We serve a local population of over 400,000 from Luton, Dunstable, together with other towns and villages in the South and Bedfordshire and North Hertfordshire region. It is this mixture of the urban and rural demographic which ensures that trainees coming to the Trust will receive experience across a broad number of patient groups.
As well as the installation of our state of the art Cardiac Cath Lab in 2013, and the modernisation of our Emergency Department; the L&D is currently undergoing a redevelopment project which will see facilities upgraded across the entire site.
The L&D has often been described by trainees as having a very strong community spirit with staff members of all grades having a strong work ethic. This includes the Postgraduate Team and Faculty who were commended for the high level of pastoral support during the last Foundation visit. The L&D PGME Team value the contribution that trainees can make to improving and refining the Foundation Programme at a local level.
Our package of F2 rotations has been developed to offer trainees the chance to expand their skill-set in a number of highly popular specialties, including; ENT, Opthalmology and Anaesthetics. We also offer a number of rotations in our highly acclaimed Emergency Medicine Department.
As well as a thriving Foundation Programme, the L&D also has a wide range of Specialty Training opportunities ranging from CMT/CT and ACCS, to ST3 and above, in all major specialties. Our GP Specialty training programme has seen the greatest expansion in terms of numbers and continues to attract trainees from the local area and further afield.
We are proud to say that year on year, previous Foundation Trainees return to the L&D to undertake their Specialty Training, citing their positive experiences of Foundation Training here, as an influencing factor.
