Interventional Neuroradiology training in East of England

INR training in the East of England is based at Addenbrooke's Hospital (Cambridge University Hospitals).

The radiology department at Addenbrooke's currently employs four neuro-interventional radiologists, who provide the full range of neuro-radiological procedures to patients referred from across East Anglia, including treating acutely ruptured intracranial aneurysms, incidental aneurysms, dural fistulae, brain AVM and acute stroke.

We are in the process of setting up an acute stroke thrombectomy service for the region, and there is a planned expansion of consultant numbers and facilities to accommodate this. We are also in the process of seeking approval for a second bi-plane angiography suite, and further consultant appointments are planned to allow the service to be offered on a 24/7 basis for stroke thrombectomy and 7 day acute aneurysm coiling, in particular.

Neuro IR training
We have a relatively new sub speciality training fellowship in interventional and diagnostic neuroradiology. This was previously only available to trainees from the Cambridge training programmes, but from 2021 will be open to radiology trainees from the region. This training would be expected to lead to competence in all aspects of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology.

Training over each year, which will all be scheduled in Addenbrooke's Hospital, is to be structured as follows:

  • Year 4:
8 sessions neuroradiology (including diagnostic and interventional sessions) and 2 general radiology sessions. Trainees will join the general radiology senior registrar on call rota (supported by a consultant general radiologist).

  • Years 5 & 6:
9 sessions neuroradiology and 1 general radiology session, joining the neuroradiology on call rota (supported by a consultant neuroradiologist).

We hope to recruit one trainee each year, appointed following interview, at the start of their 4th year of radiology training. The post will be advertised in the 6 months preceding the start and open to all trainees in the region.
