The Educational Supervisor: My name is Faiz Khan I am the Clinical Lead at Somercotes family dental practice, and throughout the last 10 years I have been consistently focused on the continuous development of both my clinical skills, and teaching and training of dentists/Nurse – I have managed to complete both the MFDS and the MFGDP, and most recently has been awarded the postgraduate certificate in endodontics and aspiring to convert it to masters. I am also in the third year of my Mclindent in prosthodontics. I have trained a large number of dental nursing staff, and I enjoy my days as a speaker in our Peer Review meetings due to my easy going nature and the love for teaching I have.
The Practice: Somercotes Family Dental Centre is a busy NHS and Private practice, in a village setting, with abundance of free street parking. It has been established for over 50 Years. The practice is set over two floors, the ground and first floor, with waiting areas on both floors. The whole practice has been recently furbished with ultra-modern equipment and Good Practice decontamination facilities. The practice has been continuously accredited under the BDA Good Practice Scheme and Investors in People Gold. These accreditations are an acknowledgment of the skill and dedication of the whole team. Everyone is happy to be involved with the Foundation dentist and all the dentists and staff in the practice are available for advice/help anytime, and particularly during periods of annual leave. The practice has fully computerized dental records and digital radiography, with amongst other things Pro-Taper system and apex locators in all treatment rooms.
The practice holds both a large GDS contract as well as a NHS Unscheduled Dental Care contract with local commissioners. The practice offers a range of treatments including minor oral surgery, prosthetics, endodontics and cosmetic procedures. All dentists are encouraged to undertake post-graduate studies, so there is constantly an atmosphere of learning and progression.
The Area: The practice is located in Somercotes a small town in the district of Amber Valley in Derbyshire, surrounded by picturesque scenery. It is within commuting distance of Nottingham and Chesterfield with regular bus routes. It is also located close to the M1 making it a good location for commuting for study days.
Other Points of Interest: The practice is a dedicated to providing a highly professional and friendly service using modern techniques, and quality materials. The dentists have varied special interests making it a good learning practice for a Foundation Dentist.
