LTFT Pilot extension for Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics trainees

Following the success of the Emergency Medicine LTFT pilot, it has been agreed to extend this pilot to Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) trainees currently working in the East of England.

The pilot is designed to enhance recruitment, reduce attrition and improve the working lives of higher specialty trainees by offering an opportunity for an improved work-life balance. Further detail can be found in the attached documentation and guidance.

The expansion is supported by the Department of Health and Social Care, HEE, NHS Employers, NHS Improvement, the General Medical Council, the British Medical Association (BMA) Junior Doctors Committee and the Royal Colleges.

Important information:

  • This pilot allows for trainees to apply for LTFT for up to 12 months under Category 3: “Trainees who choose to train LTFT as a personal choice that meets their individual professional or lifestyle needs. Whilst that choice (and the reasons for it) are not subject to the judgement of anyone else it is dependent upon and might be limited by service considerations.
  • Trainees can opt to work at 50%, 60%, 70% or 80% full time equivalent. You cannot select the days or hours you work, and this may change from week to week according to the needs of your department. Working patterns must be agreed beforehand with your Training Programme Director and Educational Supervisor.
  • You will be allowed to work occasional locum shifts in your department, but if these are frequent you may be asked to return to full time training. All locum shifts (other than true emergencies) should be prospectively agreed with your educational supervisor.
  • Your salary will be pro rata: if you are on a Tier Two visa please ensure that this will meet your visa requirements.
  • We will consider applications from all trainees currently working full time in either specialty.  Due to preexisting challenges with service delivery, we will not be able to allow more than 10% of the current full time trainees to join the pilot.
  • Applications will be accepted between 4 November and 25 November 2019, with a view to commencing LTFT training by March 2020.
  • The application form is available in the documents section at the bottom of this page, along with guidance and further information.
