enhance National Presentation and Development Day

The first NHS England enhance National Presentation and Development Day, took place on Wednesday 8th July 2026 at in Cambridge.

The Enhancing Generalist Skills, or enhance, programme was developed in response to the Future Doctor (2020) report, which highlighted the need for healthcare professionals to work confidently across complexity, uncertainty and changing population need.

Since roll-out began in 2021, enhance has grown into a national programme of learning, practice development and community building, supporting professionals to strengthen the generalist capabilities needed to deliver excellent, person-centred care across the health and care sector.

The programme has reached a wide range of professionals, including doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, allied health professionals, public health colleagues, managers, educators and colleagues working in voluntary, community and social care settings. Its strength lies in bringing people together across professional, organisational and geographical boundaries, creating a shared language and community of practice around the challenges that matter most to patients, communities and services.

enhance is structured around six core domains: person-centred practice, complex multimorbidity, system working, population health, social justice and health equity, and environmental sustainability. Cross-cutting themes of leadership, wellbeing, digital innovation and transformative reflection encourage learners to look beyond individual episodes of care and consider how services, systems and communities can work together to improve outcomes and reduce avoidable harm, duplication and inequality.

The enhance National Presentation and Development Day brought together people with a shared interest in improving healthcare to exchange learning and celebrate the work taking place across health and social care. The presentations and posters included highlighted how enhance principles are being applied in practice: redesigning pathways, improving patient experience, strengthening multidisciplinary working, advancing population health, and embedding sustainability and health equity within service improvement.

As enhance continues to evolve, this development day offered a space to recognise progress, learn from one another and strengthen the national community of practice that has developed around the programme. We encourage all who were involved to reflect on how others’ work connects with their own practice and how ideas might be adapted locally. By bringing together varied skills, experiences and knowledge, the day offered a valuable opportunity to broaden perspectives, build connections and support collaborative improvement across the system.
