NHS England East of England Approval Process of Clinical and Educational Supervisors
(Secondary Care only) - 3 Steps
Step 1 - Training
Newly appointed Clinical/Educational Supervisors or those who need re-approval are required to choose one option of training. This training is required every 5 years:
Option 1
Course delivered by College (fee applicable)
For more details, including dates and fees, please contact your College.
Course content must be approved by DME.
Option 2
Local Hub Day (Trust Course) (free of charge)
NB. this applies for courses approved in 2022 onwards
For more details please contact the Postgraduate Centre in your Trust.
Option 3
Online Training Modules - PGVLE (free of charge)
All three modules must be completed:
-
Educational Theory
-
Supporting Learning in the Clinical Workplace (Faculty Development)
-
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
For East of England Only!
The online modules have now been moved over from Bridge to the new blended learning platform, PGVLE. All licenses to Bridge will expire on 31 March 2026 and you will not be able to access anything on there after this date.
To enrol onto the online modules on PGVLE, please click here, and open 'Tier 2/3 Educational Supervisor Training'.
In order to do this, you will need a PGVLE account. If you do not already have a PGVLE account, please complete this form to register for one. New accounts are created every Friday and you will receive an email from PGVLE with your login details. Please note the email may go into your junk folder, check there in case the email doesn't arrive in your regular inbox.
If you experience any issues enrolling onto the modules, please email england.blendedlearning.eoe@nhs.net.
When completing the modules, you will be asked to complete a brief feedback form on each one. After all modules and feedback forms have been completed, you will be able to view and download your certificate on the platform.
If you have any queries regarding Option 3, please email england.educatorsfaculty.eoe@nhs.net.
Option 3 - Pre March 2024
This option is now outdated, but may be applicable to a small number of people who have previously completed a HEI course.
Tiered Approach - Both components need to be completed:
-
University (HEI) course - contract ended March 2024
-
Clinical (HEE) online content
If you have previously completed a HEI course, you will now need to complete the Online Training Modules on PGVLE (as above) to complete this option.
Additional Requirements
In addition to one of the above 3 training options, it is important that you also attend School Specific Training, to ensure you are up to date with the curriculum requirements of your School, and are aware of the following specialty specific processes: Induction, ESR’s, ACRPs, Exams and Study Leave.
Step 2 - Approval at Trust level
Once training has been completed, the NHSE EoE approval form must be completed and sent to the Postgraduate Centre at your Trust, along with evidence of training, for sign off by DME/MEM. Once approved, the Postgraduate Team will submit to the Faculty Support Team at NHSE for processing and updating on GMC.
Step 3 - GMC Connect records
GMC Connect details will be updated accordingly, and confirmation sent to MEM. Please ensure exact dates of training and approval/re-approval are provided. Any queries can be sent to england.educatorsfaculty.eoe@nhs.net.
The approval process for Primary Care educators can be found here https://heeoe.hee.nhs.uk/general_practice/becoming-gp-educator
Each Trust should run a local Local Hub Day (Trust Course) to provide local clinical and educational supervisor training.
Content should include:
- Educational Theory - can be provided as pre-course material via completion of the online module
- Induction and goal setting
- Roles of Clinical and Educational Supervision
- ESR and Assessments (ARCP)
- Flexibility in Training - LTFT/OOP
- Study Leave
- Feedback (Scenarios)
- Trainee in Difficulty
- Quality and Educational Governance
- Professional Support and Wellbeing Service (PSW)
- SuppoRTT
- EDI/Differential Attainment
- Cultural Awareness
- Active Bystander
A resource pack has been sent to each Trust which includes:
- Programme: A structured guide to the day’s agenda
- Slides: Designed to help you cover essential content
- Feedback Forms: Both generic and EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) specific forms. We kindly request that you submit the feedback forms—particularly the EDI-specific feedback—back to the faculty team. This is especially important as the EDI topics are new to our hub days, and your insights will help refine future sessions.
Please email england.educatorsfaculty.eoe@nhs.net if you need a copy of the resource pack to be re-sent.
If you have any questions at all about running a Local Hub Day, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us at england.educatorsfaculty.eoe@nhs.net.
