GP Induction and Refresher Scheme

Purpose of the Scheme

The NHS GP Induction and Refresher (I&R) Scheme provides a safe, supported and direct route for qualified GPs to join or return to NHS general practice.

It is designed for GPs who have previously been on the GMC Register and NHS England’s Medical Performers List (MPL) and would like to return to general practice after a career break, raising a family or time spent working abroad.

The scheme also supports the safe introduction of overseas GPs who have qualified outside the UK and have no previous NHS experience.

Who is Eligible?

Application for the scheme is via the GP National Recruitment Office. Doctors are able to apply from overseas, before they either return or come to the UK.  Doctors who wish to work as an independent and unsupervised GP in the UK must hold full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and are on the National Medical Performers List (MPL).

Doctors wishing to have a placement in the East of England need to be resident in the area covered by Health Education East of England. The placements will be tailored to the needs of doctors to ensure they have the confidence and knowledge needed to be a GP. Assistance for GPs facing financial hardship is available from the Cameron Fund and the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund to help with re-training.

Expenses

The scheme will offer a bursary of up to £3,500 per month and participants will be given a supervised placement in general practice. Further information on the funding available can be found here.
