Global Health Fellowships for GP Specialty Trainees - Exciting! Challenging! Rewarding!
Health Education England, East of England (EoE) provides the opportunity for Global Health Fellowships for GP Specialty Trainees and we are offering positions to those commencing GP Training. This is an opportunity to gain experience that will both compliment your GP training and lead some to develop a career incorporating Global Health. Previous trainees who have taken up the opportunity invariably describe the experience as life changing.
Global Health Fellows follow a 4-year GP training rotation that includes a year out of programme (OOPE) in rural community hospitals in South Africa. The OOPE posts in South Africa will be undertaken at the end of ST2 and trainees will then return to complete their pre-arranged ST3. In addition, Global Health Fellows will have dedicated educational support throughout their training - prior to departure, during the year away, and upon return to the UK. Although it is not a compulsory part of the programme, we are keen to support Global Health Fellows who wish to obtain the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Health (DTM&H). To this end, we will consider applications for additional unpaid time out of programme, up to 3 months, for those who undertake this course of study. We may also consider providing bursaries towards the DTM&H course fees, dependent on available funding.
Applications for Global Health Fellowships will be made after application to GP training in EoE through the EoE GP Recruitment team, details of the process can be obtained here: http://gprecruitment.hee.nhs.uk/Recruitment/GHF
Those wishing to undertake the Global Health Fellowship (GHF) scheme who will or already hold a Tier 2 visa sponsored by HEE must contact the Overseas Sponsorship Team: email@example.com to ensure that they are aware of your intentions.
If you meet the Tier 2 eligibility criteria, the Overseas Sponsorship Team will be able to sponsor you for the first 2 years of your General Practice training under a Tier 2 visa. Your visa will then need to be cancelled by the Overseas Sponsorship Team the day after you leave the UK. You will then need to be sponsored again once you plan to return to the UK after the 12 months overseas placement.
The Tier 2 cooling off period states that those who leave the Tier 2 visa status will need to wait 12 months before reapplying to Tier 2. The cooling off period will apply in the above circumstances and means that you can only reapply to return to the UK on a Tier 2 visa after a full 12 month period overseas.
For full details regarding sponsorship, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
