Equality Impact Assessments

On 5 April 2011, the Public Sector Equality Duty (the equality duty) came into force. The equality duty was created under the Equality Act 2010.

The public sector equality duty ( PSED ) requires public bodies to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between different people when carrying out their activities. The equality duty was developed to harmonise elements of pre-existing equality legislation and to extend protection for the “protected characteristics”, described in the Equality Act 2010.
Although an equalities impact assessment (EIA) is no longer a legal requirement Health Education England (HEE) recognises and values the benefits of an assessment and strives to ensure equality obligations are always considered in the planning of rotations.

An EIA template was distributed to HEE, London and South East (HEE, LaSE), and HEE, East of England (HEE, EoE) Training Programme Directors, Heads of School and Trainee Representatives for the specialty requesting comments. The documented review of each of the specialities identified any risks associated with the repatriation proposals and mitigating actions taken for protected characteristics in relation to how changes might impact on current and future trainees.
