Specialty Training posts

Currently across the UK there are approximately;

• 40 oral surgery specialty trainees.

• 755 Registered on the GDC oral surgery Specialist List (Including some OMFS surgeons)

• 70 Oral Surgery Consultants

Recruitment to specialty training

Specialty training posts in Oral Surgery are currently not centralised but advertised individually on the NHS Jobs website when posts become available. They may also be advertised in the British Dental journal. Training posts are extremely popular and vastly oversubscribed.

The Training Programme

Depending upon where the training is based it is managed by either Health Education England, National Health Education Scotland, the Wales Deanery or the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency using the Dental Gold Guide as the basis for the principles of training. The Oral Surgery specialist training curriculum has been developed from the Joint Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) for Oral Surgery Guidelines for the UK.

Oral Surgery was re-introduced in the UK as a dental specialty regulated by the General Dental Council in 2009 following a decision to unify two previously recognised specialties of Oral Surgery and Surgical Dentistry which had been established in 1996. It is an EU recognised dental specialty with EU provision for the mutual recognition of specialist training when considering applications from EU nationals for admission to the GDC specialist Oral Surgery.

On successful completion of the training programme, and having passed the Intercollegiate Membership Oral Surgery examination: http://rcseng.ac.uk/exams/dental/moralsurg an application can be made for the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) and entry to the GDC’s List of Specialists in Oral Surgery.

Specialty Registrar Post in Oral Surgery Oral surgery speciality training in the Health Education England working across the east of England area currently comprises of three years full time training at the Luton and Dunstable NHS Foundation Trust Hospital and its spoke units (including Bedford Hospital). The main aims of this training are to fulfil the curriculum criteria as outline by the Specialty Advisory Committee for Oral Surgery and the Royal College of Surgeons.

This is dependent on successful achievement of work based assessments (information of which can be found in the curriculum) and the Annual Review of Competence Progression held by Health Education England. Progression of training is monitored via the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme.

This leads to sitting the Membership in Oral Surgery Examination near or on completion of the training period.    Following successful completion of the training and passing the Membership Examination the specialty trainee can apply for entry onto the General Dental Council specialist list of Oral Surgery.

Currently, the trainee timetable comprises of:

  • Day-case sessions under general anaesthesia
  • Clinical outpatient sessions
  • intravenous sedation treatment sessions
  • Minor oral surgery with local anaesthesia
  •

Trainees can be expected to encounter a range of cases from oncological, orthognathic/orthodontic, hypodontia, dento-alveolar, salivary, oral medicine and trauma.

As well as attending study days with other trainees nationally, the Health Education England working across the east of England team organise dental study days every term including trauma, craniofacial development, medical emergencies and other core dental topics. Trainees are expected to engage in weekly study afternoons and participate at conferences with audits, poster presentations or oral presentations.
