Essex Coast is the latest Scheme to be set up within the Health Education East of England region and prides itself on its innovative and high quality learning experiences for the FDs. We are based at Basildon University Hospital which has fantastic train links to Fenchurch Street in East London. FDs on the scheme benefit from the excellent training opportunities available here in the East, whilst living on the doorstep of our bustling capital city.
The Scheme provides excellent resources and very highly regarded lecturers. We have thirteen state of the art phantom heads in the Simulation Suite (in partnership with the Basildon Scheme and the local Dental Tutor). Over 25% of the Day Release Course sessions provided are practical hands-on experiences with many taking place in the first term, creating opportunities to question some of the best minds in Foundation Training on a one to one basis.
Feedback and reflection are encouraged from both Foundation Dentists and Trainers to ensure continuous development of the programme and to assist forward planning of future educational events. Most of our Trainers either actively facilitate or support the Day Release Course sessions throughout the year.
The Training Programme Director for this Scheme is Hannah Woolnough. She is a GDP in practice in Ipswich and was a Foundation Trainer on the Ipswich Scheme until 2013, when she took over the role of Programme Director for Essex Coast. She is aided by the Dental Administrator Janet Ferriter, who is involved closely with the Scheme and the trainees. Hannah actively encourages an open and lively approach to the training year and will ensure that all individual learning needs are supported. Hannah is keen to ensure that Foundation Dentists are fully equipped to deal with life in General Dental Practice on completion of a successful and enjoyable Foundation year.
From the intimate small group teaching in the hospital, to residential courses and national conferences, we aim to provide a varied and stimulating first year in practice. You will work hard but the rewards will be worth it as you make your first steps into your professional career. Most importantly, we want you to have a year to remember for all the right reasons!
