Plastic Surgery Introduction

Introduction

Plastic and reconstructive surgery is concerned with restoration of normal human form and function.  Although it is one of the smallest and newest surgical specialties, it has been described as providing the most broad and diverse training. Some have called it the last remaining general surgical discipline in its variety and anatomical remit – placing an emphasis on transferrable principles rather than just fixed technical solutions. Higher surgical training takes 6 years from ST3-ST8.  New consultants would typically have also completed fellowships beyond this and pursue sub-specialist areas in reconstruction and Aesthetic ranging:

  • Head & Neck, Occuloplastics
  • Craniofacial, Cleft lip/palate, Ear reconstruction
  • Paediatrics, hypospadias, congenital limb reconstruction
  • Hands, wrist and brachial plexus
  • Trauma, Burns
  • Breast
  • Skin

Like other UK medical postgraduate training programs, our National training numbered (NTN) specialty trainee registrars gain their positions at a highly competitive national selection process hosted by the London Deanery.

The East of England

Our region’s training Programme typically requires trainees to rotate for 2 years in each of our 4 main units: Norfolk & Norwich, Cambridge, Stevenage and Chelmsford (all trainees will complete a 3-month rotation at the St Andrews Burns Centre).  Each of these hospitals serves a large population and our region has a large geographic catchment area.  Of note all newly appointed plastic surgery (NTN) registrars starting at Broomfield/Chelmsford will be Eastern region trainees as part of a wider repatriation process between Health Education London and East of England that should be complete by August 2018. Trainees will be assessed through the standard ISCP tools (minimum 40 WBAs, including a miniPAT per annum, expected at ARCPs). Our current Training Program Director is Mr Matthew Griffiths (Broomfield) and the trainee representative is Mr Yezen Sheena who would be happy to give more details if you are considering applying to this region.
