ImageHow to become a (good) trainer / How to improve your training

At present most hospital based consultants in Obstetrics & Gynaecology are trainers and become so on appointment. Yet we have little or no training in how to do this.

Trainers are under increasing pressure to deliver high quality training (PMETB / GMC / Deaneries / new Postgraduate Schools / RCOG) and demonstrate that they are doing this. This is in an environment where the time available to train is reducing (EWTD, NHS 18 week targets) and there is a trend to consultant based care which further reduces training opportunities (patient choice, efficient service delivery).

How can trainers keep up to date and improve?

The Deanery is currently investing in three faculty development projects. The first is aimed at providing basic training for all clinical supervisors. The other two aim to upskill a smaller number of individuals, who are particularly interested in medical education, by wholly or partly funding Postgraduate Certificates in Education.

There are in addition a number of well established regionally based courses (that many of you may have already attended) that can be accessed via the trainer development email contact below. These include a teaching course, training the trainers and appraisal & assessment. There is also the RCOG Trainers course, run biannually, and in addition some hospitals run their own local courses.

In the next section we list some useful contacts.
