Description of opportunity Research. Service users in Bedfordshire and Luton CRHTs will be invited to participate in this study. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions. A treatment as usual group which will access the Crisis Team as standard, and an experimental group which will still access treatment by the crisis team as usual, but will conjointly receive a manualised psychosocial intervention (CIM) delivered by specifically trained staff. Outcome questionnaires will be given at the time of initial acceptance into the programme and given again at discharge from the CRHT, and there will be a six month follow-up to record acute health service utilization and coping. A triangulation approach will be taken in this study in order to evaluate the value of the manualised intervention, with the use of quantitative statistical analysis, qualitative analysis, and economic analysis being implemented. The aim of the research is to consider the effectiveness of training CRHT clinicians to follow a standardised 'Crisis Intervention Manual' with the service users in their care, integrating this with usual treatment sessions.
