She is also the education advisor for the salaried dental services for Health Education East of England
Steve Davies: Qualified from Birmingham Dental Hospital in 1981 and took part in a FD scheme in general practice in the Birmingham area. This was followed by a further FD year in Community Dental practice while working as a Dental Officer in Luton. Steve completed an M.Sc. in Dental Public Health in 1988 and whilst working as a Senior Dental Officer in Bedford, was also as ES between 1989-95. He now works as a Specialist in Special Care Dentistry in Bedford and has a particular interest in behaviour management, I.V sedation and GA.
The Practices:
Leighton Buzzard: The dental clinic is based in a multi-disciplinary health centre. There are 2 dental surgeries, waiting and reception area and a separate de-contamination room. A full range of NHS treatments are carried out for a wide variety of patients. The surgery in which the FD will work provides a pleasant, spacious working environment. Both surgeries are equipped with intra-oral x-ray machines. Inhalation sedation facilities are available. There are computers in reception and both surgeries
Bedford: The Dental Care Centre is an exceptionally spacious self-contained clinic and has eight modern surgeries which have a range of chairs - knee break, bariatric and left/right-handed units. There is also a wheelchair recliner and two endodontic microscopes. There’s a separate x-ray room with intra-oral and OPG/Ceph machine and a decontamination room. Each surgery has facilities for inhalation sedation and several of the dentists also provide treatment under IV sedation. There is a staff room, summer garden and clinicians’ room with access to computers where you can study. The team is composed of experienced clinicians, nurses and a hygienist as well as endodontic, periodontal and special care specialists. Both practices have the 'Wand' local anaesthesia system to improve the patient's experience of care.
At CDS you will treat a full range of NHS patients and provide courses of treatment for adults and children which will give you the same experience to working in general dental practice . You will also get involved in treating emergency patients when you feel able to take on this role. In addition we offer the experience of working alongside specialists in endontontics, periodondology, minor oral surgery, epidemiology, special care and IV sedation.
The Area: Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town with rail links to London (approx 40 mins.) and nearby Milton Keynes. The dental clinic is within walking distance of the town centre, shops and library. There is also a leisure centre in the town.
Bedford is a thriving market town with a wide range of amenities. There is ample provision of accommodation should the Foundation dentist want to re-locate but Bedford also offers good rail links to London (several of our staff commute daily from London either by road or train).
Other Points of Interest: CDS is a Social Enterprise providing a high quality specialist dental service to patients in the community. Have you ever bought the Big Issue, eaten at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen or shopped at the Co-op? They make their money from selling goods and services in the open market, but they reinvest their profits back into the business or the local community, so when they profit, society profits.
The practices are part of Community Dental Services (CDS) and the FD's working week will be divided between the clinics in Leighton Buzzard and Bedford. Although CDS provides a range of specialist services, including those typically associated with local community dental services, you will be providing a full range of treatments for adults and children just as you would working in a more typical general dental practice.
We offer an ‘open door’ policy in the practices with a long tradition as a learning environment. In both clinics there is an existing list of patients requiring a full range of NHS treatments. If it is of interest to you, you will also have the opportunity to be involved in treating patients with additional needs, gain experience in conscious sedation and assisting and treating at general anaesthetic sessions. At the dental care centre you will work alongside range of specialists who are available to provide additional help and support in their areas of expertise .
CDS has a strong emphasis on training and the FDs are encouraged to take part in educational activities available for all staff in addition to FD training. Further information on CDS can be found at: www.communitydentalservices.co.uk
